Part Thirty-One
Sang's POV
"Kota," I was sitting at his kitchen table and I was about to fight dirty. His mom was in the living room and I hoped she could hear me.
It was Sunday after moving Dr Green into Mr Blackbourne's house. We had all finished quite late, and after eating the chilli Mr Blackbourne and I had made, we had all left. Last night I had slept with Luke and Nathan; I had been out like a light the moment my head touched the pillow and I hadn't dreamed.
Both of them were at the Diner this morning and I had gone up to Kota's. He was going to teach me some self defence, but first he made me sit with him and eat breakfast as I'd overslept with the boys and not bothered.
He lifted his head from his toast and nudged his glasses up his nose.
"I really want to go to Homecoming," I said quietly at first.
"Not happening!" he shot out and picked up his mug of coffee, his green eyes on me.
"Please, I won't drink anything at all, or eat anything, I just want to go! I knew that before there was no way I would be able to go, but now I have you and the others... please?"
"No, Sang! I told you, no more dances ever!" his voice rose in agitation. "You are not going to Homecoming and that's final!"
"Dakota Jameson Lee, you had better have a good reason for what I just heard!"
Erica stepped into the room and Kota flushed, but he held firm.
"I'm not going..." he said.
"But you have that Tux that Gabriel picked out for you!" she said and she looked as upset as I was.
"Well, I don't know why you won't go; but maybe one of the others will take you, Sang," she said that last part to me and I could see she was disappointed.
"None of us are going," he spoke up firmly and threw his last piece of toast back onto the plate.
"You can't ask Sang to go by herself!" Erica said horrified.
"Sang is not going either!" He got up and taking his plate he emptied the toast into the bin and banged the lid shut. He slid the plate onto the side and shoved his hands into his pockets.
"What?" Erica was surprised now and I was beginning to regret starting this.
"Someone drugged her drink at the dance, mom!" Kota turned to her and thrust a hand into his hair. "She wasn't hurt... but I can't keep her safe."
Erica looked at me in horror and rushed over, her hand going to my forehead. I felt uncomfortable with her touch and stayed perfectly still.
"She's fine, the Doc looked after her."
"Do you know who did it?" she demanded and tilted my chin up casting a look over my face. Happy with what she saw she let go and turned back to Kota.
"No, and that's why she's not going to Homecoming or any other dance!" he shot out.
"Kota, you can't keep her locked up," she said quietly and looked back at me. "Do you want to go, Sang?"
I nodded my head, biting my lip, my eyes on Kota. But he was glaring at his shoes and I realised the position I had put him in and the guilt strengthened.
"Kota, listen to me, I know you want to protect her and that makes me so proud.... but you have to let her make her own decisions. What are the chances of it happening again? Especially if you're aware of it and watching for it."
