Part 124
Sang's POV
"I heard them say that they were very close to finishing the job," I said quietly, my hands laced together tightly.
"What job? What about the job?" he demanded sharply.
"I don't know," I shook my head, keeping my eyes straight ahead. "All I heard them say was that they were close to finishing the job and they could leave."
"Leave? Leave the school? C'mon, you can give me more than that!" he spat." They aren't nearly finished with trying to improve the school. They've caused more trouble than they've improved. Did you hear anything else at all? You don't need me to remind you, Sang, do you? I know you're home alone there, I can get you taken into care faster than you can blink. I can get you kicked out of this school and I will! You help me, I'll help you."
"That was all I heard, just that it was nearly done and that they had found what they needed, they stopped talking when I came into the room, " I tried to keep my voice clear but it was shaky and it cracked at the end.
"Found what?" he demanded. "What have they found?"
"I don't know, they stopped talking the moment I came in and then they told me I was going with them to the hospital."
"Why? Why take you to the hospital?"
"A family friend has had a heart attack," I said, my own heart was pounding in my chest and my palms were sweaty.
"Whose family?"
"Um, just someone I know from where I live, we're not that close."
"Did they leave you alone there?"
"Yes," I said. "They left me in the restaurant area with my lunch. I didn't see them for an hour or so and then they brought me back here."
"Did they tell you what they had been doing?"
"No," I shook my head and caught Mr Blackbourne's eyes in the rear view mirror
"Good girl!" Mr Blackbourne said softly, proudly and it made me relax instantly. "Stick to that, don't deviate from it and it should be enough to get him off your back for awhile. And, if we're lucky, he might figure out that we've found something that doesn't make sense."
"He might not ask any of those questions," Dr Green spoke up. "Or he might just ask a few."
"If he questions you more on who the friend is, tell him you only know him as Antony and that you haven't known him long," Mr Blackbourne murmured, pulling the BMW into the car park for Roper's Hospital. They had used the entire trip over to get me to memorise what I would say if Mr Hendricks called me in. When I had it straight, Mr Blackbourne had got me to go through it with him playing the part of Hendricks. His whole demeanor had changed as he questioned me, even the tone of his voice, and it had produced the same results in me as if I'd been in front of Mr Hendricks.
"If he asks why we took you to see someone you don't really know, try to act confused. He might think that it was a decoy for something else," Dr Green added and turned in his seat to look at me as he undid his belt. "Ok?"
"Yes," I laughed, but it was shaky. "I'm sweating!" I wiped my palms down my skirt.
"You'll be fine, Pookie, I know you will," he said with a wink.
My door was opened and Mr Blackbourne extended his hand to me to help me out. I put my hand into his and climbed out.
"You changed so much it felt just like him," I murmured as I straightened beside him.
