Ugh, a really, really hard conversation for me with my 15 year old granddaughter.
Heavan with tears in her voice, Granny have you been watching television?
Me: Yes, but what are you watching?
Heavan: CNN, all those people in Washington.
Me: Yes I watched it for a little while, until they started the same thing over and over.
Heavan: the man was hearing voices Granny, that scares me.
Me: Heavan, I can see where it would scare you, that man showed signs of violence several different times, the medical system is set up so that nobody can do anything to help a mentally ill adult except themselves, and they are sick and don't know they need help.
Heavan: It makes me be scared for you and Poppy.
Me: Heavan, Aunt Sheryl has never shown any signs of violence at home.
Heavan: Nobody knows if that man showed any signs of violence at home Granny. What if the first sign of violence is killing somebody, what happens then? You close your eyes to how sick Aunt Sheryl is sometimes, she has been arrested for fighting with people, and she got in a fight with mom and pushed her down, even though mom got back up and took care of it, what if it had been you?
Me: Heavan, I don't know, I have made it clear that I can help her only as long as she is not violent, pop and I are too old, and so far there has not been a problem. We will just have to pray that there isn't one in the future.
Heavan: If pawpaw was not there, there would be a big problem, and you know it, so I have already told mom that you are going to have to come live with us if anything ever happens to pawpaw.
Me: Good Lord Heavan, what did I ever do to you to make you think I deserved that? I've been a good grandmother!
Heavan: Laughing, that is what mom said you would say.
