Chapter Forty Nine

Spencer's POV

  "You dated Carol?" Was the first and only thing Nat says, or asks, after all of that. That's really the main thing she got out of this?

"Um, yeah?" I question, thinking she must want to say more, right?

  "Oh shit. You're HER Spencer! You're the one that just left and disappeared into thin air! Oh my G.. you literally disappeared into thin air."

  "I.. yeah. For reasons I have now explained.. I'm sorry, so this is the part of the story that changes things? Because I would have picked out about a dozen other ones?"

  "Oh, sorry. I just can't believe you're her. I mean she always gushed about you and now I get it. Though I kind of didn't like you for what you did to Carol. And Wanda, Tony, Steve, and Bucky."

  "Um.." I'm still confused this is what we're talking about first. "Well, like I said, Thanos popped back up and I didn't want him finding me or the stone. Or have him lead to all of you and bring all his minions. So I went deeper under ground while Carol left. It wasn't the best way to handle things but I never said I was great at the relationship part. I've grown a lot since then. But it's not like I could go and apologize."

  "Shit. The Ghost did go quiet for awhile once Carol left for space again but I never would have guessed.. fuck. She has no idea?"

  "Nope."

  "Huh," what is happening? "So you told me and didn't tell her?" She sounds kind of happy?

  "Yesss..?" I'm so confused. But I think she's glad I talked to her about my past and not Carol. Which is cute? But what is going on in her head? She is all over the place tonight. I guess it's fair, but still.

  A huge smile spreads across her face. "Okay."

  That's all she says?? I guess I'll bring up the rest of it? "So.. I mean.. no comment on Thanos or hydra or any of that?

  "Seriously Nat, where the hell is your head at right now?" Yelena finally comments.

"Right! Sorry. Wow."

She waits a few more minutes before she says anything else.

  "So.. I don't even know where to begin with that, Spencer. I can't believe you had to go through all of that. You got dragged from one place to the next, being used and controlled. It's so unfair. I hate that you had to go through that. And I made you feel even shittier. I am so sorry. I didn't mean any of it. I just lost my head for a bit there."

  "Yup," is all I say as I pop the 'p'.

  "How the hell did you hold an infinity stone? And you aren't dead?"

  "Actually, I would like to know that too." Yelena pipes up. "I didn't know that part and am utterly lost."

  "Like I said, I didn't even understand what it was. I just knew I had to grab it. I don't really have an answer for you, I'm sorry. I wish I knew."

  "It's okay. You can't be expected to. You went through so much it's amazing you're you."

  "Uh, thanks?" I think Nat tried to compliment me?

  "Oh sorry. Damn, I keep having to apologize, but I feel like I keep saying the wrong things." Nat confesses as she runs her hands through her hair. I think she's more worried about what I think of her right now than the fact I was the Ghost.

  I forgive her for what she said to me in the moment. I want this woman. And maybe now I can have her. I take the few steps to her and take her in my arms.
