Chapter One Hundred Seventeen

Nats POV

It takes my brain a minute to process what she said. And when it does, all I can say is, "I'm sorry, what did you say?"

"Um, I got a call from Carol.." she does the thing where she scratches the back of her neck.

She better be nervous.

"Uh-huh. And why?"

"Why did I get a call or?"

"Yes, why did you get a call from Carol? And why did you answer it? Actually, why does she even have your number?

"Tony put all of the avengers numbers in my phone months ago, including someone with the name 'Rocket'. But I assume Carol got them all, too. I didn't give it to her.  And I answered it because I figured, if she was calling me, it was probably some kind of emergency. Which it was," but she doesn't elaborate.

Am I really going to have to pry this out of her?

"So.. what was this emergency that she could only call you for? Because as far as I know, none of us got the call," I can't help but let a small amount of anger through.

"Um.. this is the part you're probably really going to hate.."

Ha. She thinks I've liked any of this so far?

"So far I don't like any of it, so lay it on me."

"She thought she had found someone that was still connected to Thanos. She got a tip on a location where he might be and she wanted to check it, but she wanted someone as back up. Since it wasn't exactly through Fury, she didn't want to bring any of you in. And that's why she called me," she speaks really fast, trying to rip off the band aid.

It explains just about everything, I guess. But Thanos?

"Thanos, Spencer, really? You thought it'd be smart to go after someone that could be connected to Thanos? And you had to go with her?"

"I couldn't just let her go alone. She isn't one that usually calls for back up. So when she does, I know she really thinks she needs it. I had to."

Had to. Yeah. Okay. Just had to go off on a mission with her ex girlfriend without telling her current girlfriend. You'd freak out too, right?

"Did you really have to? Isn't she practically indestructible? I find it hard to believe she specifically needed your help and couldn't ask one of us to. I'm sure we could have figured it out with Fury," I'm hardly holding back now.

"Uh, well.. I can't really speak for her, but I know she was close to the location and my being able to teleport there made it so I could be there right away. I can also do the whole 'turn us invisible' thing, which comes in handy. I know you don't really like the idea of me being out there, but.."

"No, it's not just the idea of you being out there that I'm pissed about," I cut her off.

"Oh.." she whispers.

"I'm not a fan of the fact that you went with your ex girlfriend on a mission, especially without telling me. I don't like the fact that she called you specifically and you answered. Actually, you know what, where the hell even is she? You were here on your death bed and she couldn't even bother to make sure you were okay?"

Spencer cringes at my words, practically sinking back into herself. So when she speaks at a practical whisper, I'm not surprised.

"Well, um, she was here when I first got back..."
