Spencer POVAfter a few minutes we can both breathe again, I sit back up as I had fallen to the floor.
"I am so sorry Carol," I say.
"Yeah.. very sorry," Nat agrees.
"Uhuh. Yeah. Well I'm glad you two are good now and sorted out your feelings, but I'd rather just do what I came to do so I can get out of here," she says a little annoyed.
I don't really blame her. That was most definitely awkward. Probably would have been awkward for us too, had we realized she was still here. Again, oops.
"You already did what you came to do? You told Spencer the great news instead of me. Got to be the hero," Nat says with a slight bite.
"You know that was not my intention. How was I suppose to know you haven't been telling your girlfriend the truth?" Carol says back with just as much bite.
Okay, we are not going down this road again.
Nat goes to make a remark so I put my hand on her arm, getting her to look at me. I just raise an eyebrow. It's enough that she has to look away. She doesn't make the remark.
"I'm not saying everything was handled well on either side here, but I know now. I'm glad I know. Wish I found out a different way, but we can move pass that part. I'm guessing there was more to the story, Carol? I don't think you'd fly here to just shoot the breeze."
I could feel Nat tense under my hand. I'm sure because of the how I found out. That it wasn't her, it was an ex.
Carol let's out a breath, assumably to let go of some of the anger and tension.
"As I was trying to tell you before, we went to Venezuela based off a confession from one of the guys we grabbed. We got there and Tony, Wanda, and my self went ahead to check it out. Seemed like they were still there. No signs of any big runway or escape."
I nod my head, letting her know I'm listening and to continue.
"So we raided the place. They were definitely surprised; we got everybody. Scientists, leaders, guards.. there was plenty of evidence. We got it all. Some of our agents are going through the files as we speak, with Fury supervising. The scientist and everybody are in cells, to be questioned later. It's a victory," she's smiling at the end, proud of their work. They should be.
"That's amazing, Carol. You guys did some great work. And pretty quickly, too. I'm impressed. Just wish I could have helped," I don't mean it to make anyone feel bad. I just genuinely wish I could have contributed.
"I still think you could have just called us," Nat mumbles.
I glance over to her but I'm stopped from saying anything by Carol.
"It's better that you weren't.. safer. Actually, I was kind of hoping I could talk to you, Spencer. Alone," she seemed a little nervous to ask.
"Why the hell would you need to do that?" Nat snaps.
That's why she was nervous. I can't help but smirk, just a little bit.
"Uh.. well.. it's not anything bad. I'm not.. confessing my feelings or anything. I'm actually.. seeing someone. I was just hoping we could talk."
I look to Nat because I'm not doing anything she isn't comfortable with.
I hear her sigh, "fine. But I swear if you try anything.."
"I won't."
It was at that moment that the front door swung open, drawing our attention to it.
"Honey! I'm hoooome!" Yelena sings out as she enters the house.
