The first time Nereus noticed Alpheus' connection with animals was when he was nine. Alpheus had been outside reading under a tree. Nereus had tried convincing him to socialise more but Alpheus refused. He preferred to be alone.

Nereus was bringing Alpheus a cup of hot chocolate when he heard him talking to someone. He looked over to see Alpheus talking to a bird that had landed on his book. He was saying something about a 'nuclear engine' but Nereus really had no idea what that was.

As Nereus began to approach the bird noticed him and flew away. Alpheus was not happy about it.

"Hey! You just scared my new friend away!"

"Oh, well then you'll have to apologise to them for me."

Nereus smiled and handed Alpheus the cup of hot chocolate before leaving. When he checked back a few minutes later the bird was back again. They were sat in Alpheus' knee happily chirping away.

A few months later Alpheus was say under the same tree when a baby deer walked right up to him and sat down beside him. Alpheus didn't seem all that surprised and started telling the deer about some Lumurian legends Aria and Nereus had taught him. The deer seemed to be interested.

Nereus found him asleep with the mother deer and the baby several hours later. He had no idea what to do but Alpheus seemed to be constable enough so he left him there. He only woke him when it started to get dark outside.

Over the years Alpheus' animal friends started helping him pull pranks. Like the time he put superglue on Protues' staff and had some birds fly it up onto the roof. The only reason Nereus knows it was him is because Tethys caught him. Instead of telling him off she laughed and encouraged him too glue his chair to the ground as well. Nereus had a talk with the both of them and they promised not to do it again, they were lying of course.

A few months later Alpheus was out swimming. It was early in the morning but he wanted to check out a reef that had been growing near the island. He'd only been there a few minutes when he turned around to find a a pod of dolphins staring curiously at him.

"Uuuh hi?"

The one of the dolphins nudged his arm a few time0s. Alpheus didn't really understand what the dolphins were doing but he decided it would be best to get out of the water. As he swan towards his home the dolphins followed. After a few minutes of swimming Alpheus was starting to feel tired.

"Hey friends can you give me a ride back to shore?"

The dolphins were more than happy too. Needless to say when Alpheus arrived back at the island Nereus had several questions all of which were left unanswered as Alpheus quickly excused himself and went to his room.

When Nereus met Ant and he noticed his connection with Jeffrey, he found it was strikingly similar to the one Alpheus shared with his bird friends. It was almost as if the two could talk to animals on another level. And while Ant didn't seem to be swarmed by animals on the regular, Kaiko had told him several stories about Ant befriending random marine life.

Nereus didn't know what to make of it. Two different lines of the Lumurian royal family had a strong connection to nature. He figured it must have something to do with their heritage but he wasn't sure what. For the time being Alpheus and Ant's connection to animals remained a mystery, but Nereus was determined to find answers.

I think that Ant's connection with Jeffrey has something to do with him being Lumurian royalty Alpheus probably had similar connections when he was a kid and they might have faded over time or gotten stronger.

Maybe he uses the jet pack thing to out run any particularly friendly fish.... now I cant stop imagining Alpheus getting adopted by a pod of whales and needing the Nektons help...
