The next morning
"Y/N, you have been very on edge since the moment we got into the car. Is everything okay?" Nines asked from beside you, you had hoped he wouldn't notice.
But it was Nines, of course he'd notice.
And of course you were on edge, today you could actually be on the field. You were going to be called out for cases that came in, it felt almost wrong.
"I'm fine... okay I'm not fine. But I will be." You admitted to Nines, who was definitely staring at you.
"I see..." Nines mumbled, before then clicking his tongue.
"I'm just worried about going back out there, plus they won't be the crimes we're used to and what if I'm not a good Detective anymore?" You spluttered out involuntarily, they were the things you were worried about.
"Okay well firstly, that is ridiculous. You will still be an amazing Detective, yes we have been on extremely wild cases, but that does not change you nor your ability to work." Nines stated, you couldn't look over at him because you were driving, but you knew that he was probably looking at you like you were being ridiculous.
"You're completely right, I'm just being silly..." You mumbled, continuing to keep your focus on your driving.
"No, you are not being silly. You are simply being human, which is what you are. A human." Nines stated as you neared the station, you were thankful that Nines didn't think you were being silly.
"I just don't even know how to handle an average case anymore... one that doesn't involve me getting hurt or threatened." You mumbled as you pulled into one of the parking spaces, before you could cut the engine Nines reached across and did it for you.
"I understand that, but it will go back to normal before you know it..." Nines reassured, but it didn't help. For many reasons.
"Yeah... until the trial... then it will go straight back to how it was."
"You do not need to testify, Y/N, no one will make you." Nines whispered as he reached out for your hand and grasped onto it.
"I owe it to them, myself and you. I'm the only one who can speak out, Samuel is too young, so we could never ask that of him. I'm the only one still alive other than you..." You cried out as Nines' hold on your hand tightened, you hated the idea of testifying as a victim.
You had always been the Detective in cases never the victim.
"Yes, I suppose you are right on that one. But you will not be alone, I will be there. I will make sure that there is no way any of them see the outside world ever again." Nines stated, glancing up at him, you saw the raw determination in his eyes.
He meant what he had just said.
"None of them are going to be walking free, Y/N." Nines then said, with a small sigh.
"I believe you, I'm just finding all of this hard... but I'll be okay." You reassured Nines, squeezing his hand lightly hoping it would reassure him.
"You will be, I will make sure of that." Nines declared.
After a few minutes of sitting in the car, holding Nines' hand the entire time, the two of you left the car and made your way towards the station. You made sure to hold your head high, this was your job, the one you'd always been so dedicated to.
As soon as you were in the building you made your way to the desks and beelined to yours and Nines' desk.
Hank and Connor were sat at theirs, seeming to be engrossed in their conversation.
