Y/n stood in front of her mirror, hands trembling as she adjusted her jacket for the hundredth time. Her heart pounded in her chest as she glanced at the clock. Mal would be here any minute, and she wasn't sure if she was ready for this.

Mal—the daughter of Maleficent, fierce, confident, and effortlessly cool. Y/n had admired her from a distance for as long as she could remember. She hadn't planned on falling for her, but there was something about Mal's sharp wit and the way she seemed to defy the world's expectations that made Y/n's heart race every time she was near.

But there was a problem. Y/n's friends, Audrey and Chad, weren't exactly supportive of the idea of Y/n liking another girl. In fact, every time the topic came up, Audrey would wrinkle her nose in disapproval, and Chad would make snide comments. They had no idea Y/n had a crush on Mal, and Y/n wasn't sure she could handle their judgment if they found out.

She sighed, staring at her reflection. "Maybe I should just cancel," she whispered to herself, but deep down, she didn't want to. She wanted to spend time with Mal, to laugh and joke like they always did. More than anything, she wanted to stop hiding how she felt.

A soft knock on the door snapped Y/n out of her thoughts. Her heart leapt into her throat. It was Mal.

Taking a deep breath, Y/n opened the door to find Mal leaning against the doorframe, her signature smirk in place, purple hair glowing in the dim hallway light. "Hey, you ready?"

Y/n tried to smile, but her nerves made it shaky. "Yeah, totally. Come in."

Mal stepped inside, glancing around the room. "So, what's the plan for tonight? Please tell me it's something more exciting than Chad's idea of fun. I swear, if I hear him brag about his royal bloodline one more time, I might scream."

Y/n laughed despite her anxiety, but her thoughts immediately returned to her friends. "Yeah, um... about that." She hesitated, biting her lip. How could she explain that she was terrified of what they'd say if they saw her spending time with Mal?

Mal noticed the change in Y/n's demeanor, her sharp eyes softening with concern. "What's up? You're acting weird."

Y/n swallowed hard, feeling the weight of her fears pressing down on her. "It's nothing, I just... I didn't exactly tell Audrey and Chad that you were coming over."

Mal raised an eyebrow. "Why? You know they're not my biggest fans, but I thought we were past all that."

Y/n felt her chest tighten. "It's not just that. It's... them. They can be pretty... closed-minded about certain things." She looked away, her voice barely a whisper. "About me liking girls."

The words hung in the air between them, heavier than Y/n had expected. It was the first time she had said it out loud to anyone, and the fear of rejection was almost unbearable. She had seen the way Audrey and Chad talked about people who were different, how they acted like anyone who didn't fit their perfect mold was beneath them. She wasn't sure she could handle them turning on her.

Mal's expression softened, and she stepped closer, her voice gentle. "Are you saying you're afraid of what they'll think if they know about us?"

Y/n nodded, feeling the tears prick at her eyes. "I don't know how they'll react. I don't want them to hate me, but I also don't want to keep hiding who I am. I just... I'm scared, Mal."

Mal placed a hand on Y/n's shoulder, her touch warm and reassuring. "You don't have to be scared. You're allowed to be who you are, Y/n. If they can't accept that, then maybe they're not the kind of friends you need."

Y/n wiped at her eyes, a lump forming in her throat. "But they've been my friends for so long... I just don't want to lose them."

Mal's gaze softened even more, and she squeezed Y/n's shoulder gently. "Sometimes, standing up for yourself means risking the things that don't really matter. The people who care about you—the real you—will stick around. And if Audrey and Chad can't handle that, then that's their problem, not yours."

Y/n looked into Mal's green eyes, feeling a sense of calm wash over her. Maybe Mal was right. Maybe it was time she stopped letting her fear of rejection control her life.

She took a deep breath, steeling herself. "You're right. I shouldn't be afraid to invite you or spend time with you just because they might not like it."

Mal smiled, that confident smirk returning. "Good. Because I'm not going anywhere."

Y/n felt a surge of warmth in her chest, a sense of relief that she hadn't expected. She glanced toward her phone, knowing that any minute Audrey and Chad might call to check in, but for the first time, she didn't care.

"Come on," Y/n said, a newfound resolve in her voice. "Let's go meet up with them. I don't care what they think anymore. If they can't accept me for who I am, then I'm done pretending to be someone I'm not."

Mal grinned. "That's the spirit."

They left Y/n's house together, walking side by side through the dimly lit streets. Y/n felt lighter than she had in a long time, like a weight had been lifted from her shoulders. She wasn't sure what Audrey and Chad would say when they saw her with Mal, but for the first time, she wasn't afraid of their reactions.

When they arrived at the usual spot, Audrey and Chad were already waiting. Chad was leaning against the wall, looking as arrogant as ever, while Audrey was scrolling through her phone, looking bored.

Y/n squared her shoulders as they approached. This was it—the moment she'd been dreading. But with Mal by her side, she felt stronger.

Audrey looked up first, her eyes widening slightly when she saw Mal. "Oh... Mal, you're here."

Chad sneered. "Great, just what we needed."

Y/n didn't flinch. She took a deep breath and spoke before they could say anything else. "I invited Mal. And you know what? If you can't handle that, then that's your problem. I'm tired of pretending to be someone I'm not just to make you both happy."

Audrey blinked, taken aback by Y/n's sudden boldness. "Y/n, what the fuck are you talking about?"

"I'm saying that I like girls. I like Mal," Y/n said, her voice steady. "And if you can't accept that, then maybe we're not really friends."

The silence that followed was deafening. Chad opened his mouth, but no words came out. Audrey looked between Y/n and Mal, clearly shocked.

Y/n braced herself for the worst, but Mal stood tall beside her, unfazed by their reactions.

After what felt like an eternity, Audrey finally spoke. "Y/n... if that's how you feel, then... I guess we'll have to deal with it." She sounded hesitant but not entirely hostile.

Chad scoffed but didn't say anything. It was clear he wasn't happy, but for once, he kept his mouth shut.

Y/n let out a breath she hadn't realized she'd been holding. She had done it—she had finally stood up for herself.

Mal gave her a small, proud smile. "Told you it'd be okay."

Y/n smiled back, feeling more at peace with herself than she ever had before. No matter what happened with her friends, she knew now that she didn't have to hide who she was anymore. And that was the best feeling of all.
