It was the first day of university, and Sunny Starscout was excited yet slightly nervous. She had come a long way from Maretime Bay, eager to learn new things, meet new ponies (and humans), and continue her journey toward creating a more harmonious world. As she trotted through the busy campus, her saddlebag filled with books, she couldn't help but feel the buzz of anticipation in the air.
Her eyes wandered around the courtyard, watching students mingle, laugh, and rush to their classes. That's when she saw Y/n—a girl leaning casually against a tree, her eyes seemingly locked on Sunny with an intense, almost eerie focus. It gave Sunny a shiver down her spine. Y/n's gaze was sharp and calculating, unlike anything Sunny had experienced. Something about her felt...off.
Sunny quickened her pace, trying to shake off the strange feeling, but as she turned a corner into one of the quieter hallways of the university, there Y/n was again, standing calmly against the wall. Her presence seemed almost too casual, as if she had been waiting for her.
"Sunny Starscout," Y/n said, her voice low and smooth, almost like a whisper that floated in the air. "Daughter of Argyle Starshine. Advocate for peace between earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns. Famous for restoring magic to Equestria."
Sunny froze, her heart skipping a beat. How did she know so much about her? The way Y/n rattled off her history made her feel exposed, vulnerable, like this stranger had access to parts of her life no one should know.
Sunny's ears flattened against her head. "W-who are you? How do you know all of that?"
Y/n leaned closer, her lips curving into a small smile that sent chills through Sunny. "I know everything about you, Sunny. What you've done. Who you are." Her voice dipped into a darker, more chilling tone. "The kind of secrets you wouldn't want anyone else to find out."
Sunny's heart raced. She took a step back, her hooves clattering nervously on the floor. "What do you want from me?"
Y/n tilted her head, eyes gleaming with amusement. "What do I want? Nothing, really. Just to let you know that I know everything." She paused, letting her words hang ominously in the air. "For example, did you know that rich, spoiled-looking pony over there—" Y/n gestured to a glamorous, high-society pony strutting across the campus courtyard, "—has dyslexia? And she's built wells in Africa for people without clean water."
Sunny blinked, confusion overriding her fear for a moment. She glanced at the pony in question, a pegasus mare named Diamond Sparkle, who indeed looked like she came from a life of luxury—her mane styled perfectly, her designer saddlebag slung over her shoulder. "What?" Sunny whispered. "How do you know that?"
Y/n shrugged casually, her voice shifting back to a more neutral tone. "I read her file, just like I read yours. Relax, Sunny. I'm not some murderous whore like you probably think I am," she said with a sly smile, reading the confusion and fear still swirling in Sunny's eyes. "I'm just really good at gathering information. Maybe a little too good."
Sunny's body tensed, still on edge, but now she realized that Y/n's knowledge came from something less sinister than she had originally thought. She let out a small breath, still uneasy but no longer terrified. "You—read my file?"
Y/n nodded, leaning back against the wall with an almost bored expression. "University records, personal history, you name it. It's not that hard to find if you know where to look. I make it a point to know about the people around me, especially ones as...interesting as you."
Sunny frowned, feeling both relieved and a bit annoyed. "That's... invasive. You can't just go around reading people's files like that."
Y/n's eyes softened, the mysterious tension in the air dissipating as she sighed. "Yeah, I know. It's a bad habit. But hey, you'd be surprised how much people hide behind their appearances." She nodded toward Diamond Sparkle again. "Most people would assume she's just some rich, spoiled brat, but look deeper, and you see someone who's dedicated her life to helping others, despite her struggles with dyslexia."
Sunny glanced at Diamond Sparkle once more, feeling a twinge of guilt for judging her so quickly. "I... I guess you're right. I didn't know that about her."
"Exactly," Y/n replied, pushing off from the wall. "Everyone has a story, Sunny. Even the ones who seem perfect on the outside. You should know that better than anyone."
Sunny was still cautious, but she nodded, realizing that Y/n wasn't as dangerous as she had initially thought. Instead, she was just...eccentric. "Okay, well, maybe next time, try asking people instead of digging through their files."
Y/n smirked. "Fair enough." With that, she turned and walked away, leaving Sunny standing there in the hallway, her heart still beating a little faster than usual.
Sunny watched her go, still processing the strange encounter. "What a weird first day," she muttered to herself, shaking her head. But as she looked over at Diamond Sparkle again, she couldn't help but smile a little. Maybe Y/n had a point—everyone had layers, and not everything was as it seemed.
And maybe, just maybe, there was more to Y/n too.
