Seoul buzzed with neon and noise, but inside the L/n family's sprawling home—part subway station, part dive bar—the chaos was more personal. The faint hum of a train rattled the floorboards, mixing with the clink of glasses and the low murmur of late-night drinkers at the bar. Y/n, eighteen, rummaged through her sister Zoey's enchanted backpack, her fingers brushing past a crumpled coupon for a discount on a dildo. She snorted, raising an eyebrow. Zoey's hiding this kind of thing now? she thought, half-amused, half-annoyed at her sister's attempt at secrecy.
The backpack, charmed by Zoey's meticulous spellwork, didn't take kindly to Y/n's snooping. With a sudden lurch, it yanked her upside down, her black hair spilling toward the floor as her legs kicked uselessly in the air. "Oh, come on!" Y/n groaned, wrestling with the bag's straps as it tightened its grip like a pissed-off python.
The commotion drew Zoey, who strode in from the bar area, a half-empty soju bottle in hand. "Y/n, what the hell are you doing to my stuff?" she snapped, her sharp eyes narrowing. Zoey, older by two years, had the kind of presence that made people listen—partly because she was a demon-hunting sorceress, partly because she was a K-pop idol in their group HUNTR/X, and partly because she just didn't take shit from anyone.
Before Y/n could answer, their father, F/n, poked his head out from behind the bar, wiping a glass with a rag. "Girls, keep it down. We've got customers." A former sorcerer who'd given up his powers to marry their mortal mother, M/n, he still had the weary look of someone who'd seen too many demons—and too many family arguments. M/n appeared beside him, her arms crossed, her expression a mix of exasperation and suspicion. "Y/n, why are you upside down? And Zoey, why is your bag attacking her?"
"It's not my fault she's nosy," Zoey muttered, setting the soju down and waving her wand—a sleek, silver thing etched with runes—at the backpack. It released Y/n, who landed on the floor with a thud, muttering curses.
F/n sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. "I swear, you two are worse than the demons you hunt." He hesitated, then added, almost to himself, "At least I didn't lend Zoey the Forbidden Spellbook this time."
Y/n's ears perked up. Forbidden Spellbook? She shot Zoey a glance, but her sister was too busy inspecting her bag to notice. M/n, however, caught the look. "Don't even think about it, Y/n," she warned, her voice like steel. "You're barely responsible enough to handle your wand, let alone that book."
Y/n rolled her eyes but said nothing. The wand in question—her family's heirloom, a polished ebony rod that hummed with power—sat tucked in her back pocket. Both she and Zoey had been gifted wands by F/n, a perk of his sorcerer days, and Rumi, Y/n's girlfriend, had one from her own sorceress mother. Together, the three of them were HUNTR/X, slaying demons and performing sold-out shows with equal ferocity. Their latest triumph—a rainbow-hued Honmoon that sealed a demon rift after they'd taken down Gwi-Ma—had left them feeling invincible. The Honmoon wasn't the fabled Golden Honmoon that could banish demons for good, but it was a game-changer, a symbol of their new approach: no more hiding, no more shame, just raw, honest power that stopped demons from spawning. Tonight, though, Y/n wasn't thinking about demons. She wanted to celebrate.
