Y/n sat on the edge of the stands, watching Riley skate across the ice, her heart swelling with pride. It was the final hockey game of the season, and Riley had been playing brilliantly. But suddenly, things shifted. Y/n noticed Riley's posture tense as she was sent to the penalty box, her face turning pale as she sat alone. Her breaths became uneven, her hand clutching her chest.
Recognizing the signs of an anxiety attack, Y/n jumped from her seat, ignoring the worried glances of other spectators. She made her way quickly toward the rink, catching the coach's eye to explain, "I need to help her. She's struggling."
Y/n knelt beside Riley at the edge of the penalty box, her voice soft and calming. "Hey, Riley. I'm here, it's okay. Look at me." Riley's wide eyes met Y/n's, full of panic and fear, her chest heaving as her mind spiraled. Y/n knew this feeling all too well—she had been there herself once.
Inside Riley's mind, Anxiety was wreaking havoc. It had taken control of the command center, pushing Joy and the other emotions aside as it raged. Joy, desperate to calm Riley, shouted to Y/n, hoping that her friend could help.
"Riley, focus on your breathing, okay? In through your nose, out through your mouth. You're not alone in this." Y/n demonstrated the breath, slow and deliberate, waiting until Riley followed suit. The chaos in Riley's mind began to slow as Joy attempted to regain control, but Anxiety was still gripping tightly onto the board.
Y/n reached out, placing her hands gently on Riley's shoulders. "Feel this? You're grounded, right here. You're safe." She guided Riley's attention to her hands, encouraging her to feel the touch, the warmth. "You've got control, Riley. You're not alone in this."
As Riley's breathing began to steady, she whispered, "I can't... I'm not good enough."
Y/n shook her head, locking eyes with her. "That's not true. You're strong. I know this is hard, but you're capable of handling it. You've already done so much."
Inside Riley's mind, Joy broke through, challenging Anxiety. "You were trying to protect her, but it's time to let go now. Riley's okay." Slowly, with Joy's help and Y/n's comforting presence outside, Anxiety released its grip on the control panel.
Riley's body relaxed. "I think... I think I'm okay now," she said, her voice shaky but clearer. Y/n smiled, brushing a strand of hair from Riley's face.
"You did great," Y/n said softly. "You faced it, and you're still here. That's all that matters." Riley gave a small nod, tears welling up in her eyes. "Whenever you feel like this again, just remember—you can always ground yourself, focus on what's real."
Riley took one more deep breath, feeling her feet firmly on the ice, her hands on her legs, and the cool breeze through the rink. "Thanks, Y/n," she whispered, her heart lighter.
"Anytime," Y/n said, giving her a reassuring pat on the back before standing to rejoin the stands. As Riley stepped out of the penalty box, she glanced up, seeing the sunlight streaming through the rink's windows, and felt a calmness settle over her.
Y/n watched from her seat, knowing that Riley had learned something crucial that day: she wasn't alone, and with the right tools, she could find her way through the storm of anxiety.
