Darkness.
That's all there had been for quite some time now. Even in the vast emptiness that the void was, time persisted, its sole purpose to ravage the darkness's only occupant.
There was a time where the light returned, but it was only for a fleeting moment. The dark swiftly took hold of them again, and kept them in its cold, discomforting embrace for what felt eternity. But this time, they were conscious of it all, granted the blessing and curse of being able to think.
For now, it was that single ability that helped them realize: that light they were graced with was an entire world. A world they were a part of, that they could only rejoin by opening their eyes. But no matter how hard they tried, they couldn't.
They could do nothing else. Thinking was all they could do now, the very thing that had been taken away from them, the reason they had plunged into the dark in the first place. That was strange. It seems like past experiences, or perhaps the elusive dream, were beginning to join their current thoughts.
But for some reason, the capacity to do anything beyond think eluded them. They were certain that they had them, but for some reason, they couldn't open their eyes.
For some reason, you didn't wake up.
More started to come to you now, and it was then that you realized that you were more than a disembodied voice and a pair of eyes; you were an entire person. With your capability to think came the capability to feel, not just physically, but mentally. Not wanting to be immersed in the growing psychological anguish as you recalled more of who you are, you tried your best to open your eyes. You found yourself powerless in doing so.
The problem escaped you, for you couldn't possibly comprehend the reason for it. You interpreted your powerlessness as of the mind, even of the soul, when in actuality it was of the body. In addition to your eyes, you were unable to move any other muscle.
'Why can't I move?'
'Wha?'
'Why can't I open my eyes?'
'Why can't I wake up?'
You didn't realize that you were tossing and turning.
Nor did you realize you were staring up at the ceiling of your dorm room.
It took you no more than a few moments to come to terms with, well, everything. Who you were, where you were, and why you were where you were now.
When it finally hit you, you slowly tried to sit up, only to fail miserably. You believed your paralysis to be a result of trying to move quickly after waking, but the horrifying truth soon became apparent. Your body no longer felt like your own.
Take your time, your muscles and nerves were unable to tell you, for they were practically nonexistent.
What's going on? Where have they gone? You resorted to asking your mind, for there was no other part of you to question.
Now facing the wall, you could barely see the corner of the door frame of your dorm room at the edge of your vision.
Still in shock from your inability to move, you began to compel every fiber of your body to bend and contract, to try and find any part of it that may yet function. Of all the things to first reveal itself to work, it was your neck, as it suddenly jerked to the left against the orders you gave it.
Wall. It was refreshing to know that there was more to see, but it wasn't exactly a complete change of scenery. There were wonders in your room beyond the darkness that you set your eyes upon, but you were certain there was something else...
Oh, you figured it out. Something was bothering you.
In between your own breaths, you thought you heard someone else breathing.
