=VAMPLING ORIGINS & BIOLOGY=

Much like the Inklings and Octolings, who evolved approximately 5,000 years before the events of Splatoon, the Vamplings—often referred to as Draculings among enthusiasts—have their own fascinating evolutionary story. Originally, these beings were vampire squids, a unique cephalopod species that evolved the extraordinary ability to shift between two distinct forms: a humanoid form, which allows for greater interaction and manipulation of their environment, and a squid form, optimized for swift swimming through the vibrant currents of ink in their aquatic habitats.

Though the name "vampire squid" includes the term "squid," it's important to note that they are fundamentally different from typical squids and octopuses. In fact, vampire squids are considered living fossils, having persisted relatively unchanged since the Jurassic period, demonstrating impressive resilience that has enabled them to survive countless environmental shifts over millions of years.

Adding to their intrigue, Vampling "ink" differs significantly from the conventional ink produced by Inklings and Octolings. Instead, it is a bioluminescent slime, which glows with an ethereal light, enabling Vamplings to create stunning visual displays while covering territory in ink.

=VAMPLING CULTURE=

While the Octarians faced unfamiliar and harsh underground conditions after their defeat in the Great Turf War, the Vamplings were perfectly adapted to their subterranean way of life. Their underground city, Azoidia, was a sprawling metropolis distinguished by its impressive scale, cutting-edge technology, and breathtaking visuals. The Vamplings' diet was notably simple, reflecting their preference for preservation and waste reduction, and they often carefully kept and used food resources. Their distinctive gothic aesthetic, complemented by hair that resembled a vampire's cloak, earned them the informal nickname Draculings—a nod to the infamous ruler of Dacnya and the legendary vampire king, Volodymyr Drăculești Țepeș V, better known as Dracula. This nickname contributed to widespread stereotypes that Vamplings were secretly vampires.

In their quest for better prosperity, the Vamplings constructed a high-speed tram system to reach the surface world—an area they once regarded as mere myths and legends. Over time, they integrated into the urban landscapes of Inkopolis and Splatsville, now considering these bustling cities their second homes. This integration spurred the development of numerous Vampling communities, where many inhabitants learned the Inkling language as their second tongue and actively participated in Turf Wars, further blending their culture into the broader societal fabric.
