Chapter 5

"Alright, I came back... can we get this over with," Maddy said walking up towards Howard.

Howard nodded... while extending out his hand, which was taken by Maddy.

They walked around towards the back of the stage.... a woman who was also dressed in a military uniform stood next to a black Cadillac, she looked surprised when she saw Howard and Maddy walk up.

"This is the girl you picked, I hope Dr. Erskine did better," The woman replied with a thick English accent.

"Excuse me, who do you think are?" Maddy frowned.

"Margaret Carter, but you shall call me Peggy," Peggy smiled.

Howard laughed.

"Peggy this is Maddy Rogers," Howard replied.

"Well Maddy Rogers.... I can tell you and I are gonna get along just fine," Peggy smirked.

Peggy opened the door to the Cadillac, both Howard and Maddy climbed in.

"Whose Dr. Erskine?" Maddy asked.

"He represents the Strategic Scientific Reserve, it's where Howard and I work," Peggy replied.

"Do you have a family, Maddy?" Howard asked.

"I have an older brother, my father died just before I was born, my mother died 5 years ago," Maddy said.

"Where are you supposed to be stationed?" Peggy asked.

"Jersey," Maddy said.

Maddy sighed and looked out the window.... she noticed they were driving through Brooklyn, suddenly they pulled up next to a small antique shop.

"Ooo wonderful.... a small antique store," Maddy said sarcastically.

Howard laughed.

"Come on let's go," Peggy smiled.

They all three climbed out of the Cadillac... and walked into the antique shop, they were greeted by an old lady.

"Lovely weather this morning, isn't it?" The lady asked.

"Yes, but I always carry an umbrella," Peggy smiled.

I suppose you can't be too careful," The lady said.

"Best to be prepared for the shift in the wind," Peggy replied.

The lady puts her hands under the counter.

Peggy leads Howard and Maddy though a door in the back.

They find a marine guarding a huge metal door... as they walk in the marine stands up and salutes.

Maddy steps out onto a raised platform and gapes... a huge, ultra modern rebirth lab stood before her eyes.

A film crew began to set up.

Everyone looks up at Maddy... she saw so much respect in their eyes, it gave her hope.

Suddenly an older man scurries past her.

"That's Dr. Erakine, good news.. apparently he got you brother, to be the other candidate," Peggy smiled.

"Steve and I are gonna be super soldiers?" Maddy asked.

Peggy nodded.

Maddy breaths in... her breathing becomes shaky.

Peggy placed a hand on Maddy's shoulder and gently squeezes it.

"Everything will be just fine," Peggy smiled.

Peggy turned on her heels... and walked away.

Maddy walked down the stairs and towards the device.... Howard helps her in.

Howard nods to the attendants, who quickly hook up Maddy.

"Dr. Erskine how are your levels?" Howard asked.

"Coils are at peak, levels are 100%. We may dim half the lights in Brooklyn, but we're ready.... as we'll ever be," Dr. Erskine said.

Maddy eyes Dr. Erskine warily.
