Chapter 68

Maddy stood next to a window, looking at pictures of Peggy and her family.... Steve sat next to her bed, where Peggy laid sickly.

"You should be proud of yourself Peggy," Steve spoke up.

"Mm. I have lived a life. My only regret is that you... and Maddy didn't get to live the life you both deserved," Peggy said.

Maddy and Steve both looked down.... sadness filled them both.

"What is it?" Peggy asked.

"For as long as I....We can remember we've always wanted to do what was right. I guess we aren't quite sure what we want anymore. And we thought we could throw ourselves back in and follow orders, serve. It's just not the same," Steve shrugged.

Peggy laughed.

"You're always so dramatic. Look, you both saved the world. We rather.... mucked it up," Peggy smiled.

"You didn't. Knowing that you helped found SHIELD is half the reason why me and Maddy stayed," Steve said.

Peggy takes Steve's hand.... she looks over at Maddy and pats the bed.

Maddy walked over to the other side and sat down at the end of the bed.

"Hey. The world has changed and none of us can go back. All we can do is our best, and sometimes the best that we can do is... start over," Peggy sighed.

Peggy started to cough hard... causing Maddy to jump, Steve quickly turns to his side and pours her a glass of water... and hands it to her.

"Peggy?" Maddy asked.

Suddenly Peggy looks from Steve than to Maddy.... looking at them like it was the first time since they were frozen.

"Steve? Maddy?" Peggy questioned.

"Yeah?" Steve and Maddy both said.

"Your both alive! You both... came, you both came back," Peggy croaked.

"Yeah Peggy!" Maddy replied, tears began to well up in her eyes.

"It's been so long. So long," Peggy cried.

"Well, I couldn't leave my best girl. Not when she owes me a dance," Steve smiled.

Suddenly Maddy's phone began to ring, she quickly stood up and looked at it.

Fury: meet me at SHIELD headquarters. ASAP.

Maddy looked up at Steve and nodded....

"Goodbye Peggy! I'll come see you soon," Maddy smiled, before walking out the door.
