weather the storm

Kai kept snarling as Sophie led her through the city, carefully travelling through the cracks and alleys. Soon, she stopped at the gates of a cemetery and pushed it open. The way the ancient wind responded to her presence told him that this was the true heart of New Orleans, the core of magic.

He grinned. Kai imagined how much of that power would charge his body through the siphoning. His eyes flickered, fingers brushing against the cool stone.

Sophie, who was walking ahead didn't even turn to see him as she said, "Try to pull the magic out of our sacred place and it will kill you."

Kai froze, smirk wiped off. He narrowed his eyes but pulled his hand back. "So you know about my ability." My defect, he thought.

"As I said, we know about you. How you're a broken witch who steals magic for himself. How your power can rattle the gates of this city if you ever learned our Initial Conjuration. But your girlfriend...that Bennett would fracture the world if she learned our ways. Sometimes, great power is better left untouched," Sophie said, leading them through the countless rows of graves.

The death of their ancestors was what powered their ancestral magic, it made sense that the cemetery was their powerhouse. Kai clapped once, and stopped walking after. "Okay, long story short, I am not going to help you. You see, you're right. Bonnie will literally break the world if I don't get back by curfew so...thanks for the invitation to your little cult, but no."

Sophie huffed and turned to him with her eyebrows raised. "Did you not hear what I said? Davina will explode if we don't kill her. Our magic is so large that it had to be divided into four vessels. 4 girls. We were mid practicing our harvest, by killing the first girl so that the magic can jump unto the second one. And so on until the fourth. The fourth carries it all, but not for long. Davina is the last step and the night that our magic was to return, Marcel interfered and this only angered our ancestors."

"You clearly haven't heard about Bonnie and I. There's this thing called loopholes? And I would rather find that than let the magic return back to your sociopathic ancestors."

"Fine," Sophie said and Kai blinked. He didn't think that it would be that easy. "Then we kill the child."

Kai was mid-turning but he whirled back to her. He laughed casually. "I can't let you do that either."

"Which is it, Parker? We kill Davina to cultivate our magic once more before she erupts or we kill the miracle baby to grant our sociopathic ancestors enough power to weather the storm that will rain on New Orleans. You're lucky that I am giving you a choice."

Both options would be a no in Bonnie's book. He tried, really tried to think for the best way around this, to think rationally but nothing came to mind. All he wanted to do was snap her neck. But he knew that it would only rile the witches even more. Kai tallied up in his head. The obvious choice would be to kill the vessel, Davina, and then find a way to control the witches. But if they could barely handle them now—giving them more power was stupid. And then there was the baby, the one he knew grew in Hayley's womb. He hadn't told Bonnie but the child already had great power. He felt it. Kai remembered one night when Hayley and Bonnie were asleep. That magic called to him, his siphoning abilities stirring with greed. He was so blinded by the hunger of the magic that he didn't realize that he was siphoning from Hayley's stomach—the baby. He could feel the magic slowly leech away from the babe and he knew he was killing it. Kai retreated quickly and the next morning, Hayley woke with a stomach ache. He never said a thing.

Kai balled his fist. None were good options and Sophie tapped her foot, giving him time. Kai licked his lips and said, "What if I had a better offer?"

Sophie blinked but slowly shook her head. "There is no other offer but these two."

"You're looking for a massive, strong source of magic, right? What if I gave you the Originals?" She stilled, contemplating in her head. "Their blood is the origin of every single vampire in the world, their blood has the essence of the Original Witch and their father was the Vampire Hunter. The baby only has a fraction of this. I can bring you Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah and the other idiots that are related to them. And when you take that magic, immortality will still be in it, without the whole blood-lusting of course. You wouldn't need to pass your magic through your ancestors or whatever that bullshit is."

"You'll never be able to defeat them, the Mikaelson's are impenetrable," she scoffed in disbelief.

"I can if it's behind their backs. They think that I am with them. But I will only follow you if you promise not to use that magic against me, Bonnie, Hayley, the baby or Davina." Kai knew that offering the magic preserved in the Originals was no better than giving them Davina but he had to make some sort of truce. And a world without vampires would be better, healthier. Not to mention, he had plans for Davina himself. She honed all of that power and the hunger in Kai couldn't quench. He remembered long ago that magic like that could be permanent. All he had to do was capture Davina, rewire the magic so that when it releases, when he kills her, it goes to him, not the dead ancestors. That way Kai never has to siphon again, never has to draw magic unintentionally out of Bonnie when she was sleeping. When they cuddled, the sentiment was so blind to his magic that it began to pull from her. He never wanted to tell her that that was why she was always so tired. "You promise to protect us and treat us like one of your own." Bonnie wouldn't be happy but it was for her own good. And he had included Hayley in the bargain so she wouldn't be too mad. Deep down, he knew that if he had been given more time to think about it, he wouldn't have cared if Hayley died.

Sophie was thinking, thinking really hard. Then she took a deep breath. "Very well, Kai. We have a deal. But in order for you to take the Mikaelson's down, we need to strengthen you. Have you heard of the Initial Conjuration?"

"Look. The future sounds great, all right? I'm super excited about the Internet, but 1994 has been my home for most of my life. I'd hate to get homesick."
