dull eyes

Kai's eyes glinted with excitement as he left the tank he was at to stand beside Bonnie, who had taken a couple of steps back from the angry Heretic. Her bare chest, mostly under the translucent water, was panting up and down. You could tell she still hadn't wrapped her head around what was happening and all she wanted was her significant other.

"Welcome back, Nora," Kai saluted, tossing her his jacket. Now he stood in a grey t-shirt, arms placed in front of him.

She took it warily, finally stepping out of the tub. The water ran down her body rapidly, soaking up the floor under her feet. She hugged the clothing to her skin and her eyes finally fell on the other two tanks, identical to hers. "Back? What have you done?"

"We can have this conversation under much better circumstances," he gave a pointed glare to her bare legs and pale face. Nora's eyes fell to Bonnie, who was quiet and behind Kai the whole time. She shook her head slowly, warning her to not listen to a word he was saying. Kai caught it and he scoffed. "We had a deal. I bring back precious Elena and I get the first Heretic."

"Now, I say the second. Nora...and I have history," Bonnie said, recalling the time when she spent Christmas with the chaotic witch-vampire. It was tough, but in all, it was pleasing. And she did not want to know what Kai had in store for her when Bonnie knew Nora had an adequate, semi-okay side.

Kai glanced between the two of them, questioning whether or not he should take her suggestion. He sighed, shaking his head. "Unfortunately, I don't have time for your reunions. I need to get goin--" He raised his hand, prepared to take the woman by force. But Bonnie yanked his hand back.

Kai turned to her, eyes shocked. He glanced at their skin contact and looked back at her. Bonnie growled, "I said no. Wait for the next one."

"BonBon--" Kai was saying but the swishing of water behind them caught both their attention.

Nora stood above the second tank, peering in with curiosity. "I appreciate your will to safeguard me, Bonnie. But I am a woman who's learned to take care of herself since a young age. Now, my question has not been replied and I am growing impatient. Where is Mary Louise?"

Bonnie ran a hand through her hair. "That is a very good question. She could either be one of the two in the tanks or..."

"You brought me back but not her? I can assure you that if that's the case, I will not aid you in any way." Her eyes turned glassy but they crackled with anger, a terrifying sight. "I will reign terror--" The water rippled, this time on its own. The room was memorized as they all watched the familiar head rise from the tank. Nora's teeth clenched together as her words formed the name of the one who blinked back at her. "Malcolm."

He didn't even have a chance to greet his sister, Kai had already approached, spelling them away.

Nora gasped, searching the room. "What--why has he taken Malcolm?"

Bonnie sighed, making her way to the last tank of water. "You've missed a lot, Nora."

"Yes, I am quite aware of that. Nothing I'm not used to, I've risen from a prison world after centuries. And somehow after my death, I've returned and you're still alive. So explain to me, what is the meaning of this madness?"

"I made a deal with Kai. He brings back Elena, saving two very important girls, and I would help him bring back a key piece to his plans. He only needed one Heretic, the remaining were just extra," she explained.

"Are you attempting to voice that I should be grateful that you've saved me from his cruel hand? My life is meaningless without Mary Louise and I will not live any second longer in this insane world without her at my side."

Bonnie shrugged, she didn't know how she could help. It was a 50/50 chance for Mary Louise to rise. It was either her or Beau. She wondered what way Nora would cope with the loss of her loved one once fate takes its turn with her. She wanted to show her understanding, her similarity with her but Bonnie was afraid that Nora would only misinterpret it as manipulation.

The water sloshed and Nora's grip on the jacket seemed painful. She was silent, anticipating for it to happen quicker. Bonnie stood at her side, waiting for the last Heretic to sit up. When it did, Mary Louise coughed away the excess water. Nora gasped, reaching for the blonde-haired beauty. She hugged the woman with strong might and Mary Louise was taken aback, shocked at the sudden affection. "Nora?"

"Oh, Mary Louise. I cannot express in words how glad I am that it is you who came back." Nora pulled back, cupping the cheek of her lover.

She smiled back, completely engulfed in the gaze of her other half. "My love. We've finally been reunited again."

The two Heretics sat on the couch, both opposite from Bonnie. She handed them both a cup of tea, sinking into the couch in the home Nora compelled for them to burrow. Mary Louise took the first sip, grimacing. "It's too soothing for me. Where's the bourbon?"

Nora chuckled, shaking her head. They had both changed into their usual attires and were looking fresh as the last day Bonnie saw them. "Ignore her. She's obviously not accustomed to being a grateful guest. So what have we missed?" She took a generous sip of the jasmine tea, looking at Bonnie over the tip of the cup.

"The usual. Bad guys coming to Mystic Falls, everyone dying, I'm sure you can guess the rest." She shrugged.

Nora set the cup down on the coffee in front of them, between the couch Bonnie was on and theirs. "Surely that's not all. I took one look at you and noticed those awfully dull eyes of yours. The Bonnie I remembered had an ember burning her irises and I see none of that now."

Bonnie sighed, propping her elbows on her knee. "I'm just tired."

Nora and Mary Louise shared a glance, speaking silently between each other. Mary Louise turned back, addressing Bonnie. "It has to do with Kai, doesn't it?"

Obviously. Who else would it be about? She recalled his words. Bonnie pushed back into the couch, pulling her legs to her chest. "He's like a virus that won't go away. No cure, no vaccine, no nothing."

"Lily told us about how...anarchic he can be at times," Nora said. "But I'm sure he'll come around--"

"Have you even met Kai Parker? There's is no coming around for him." That was right, Kai had never physically met the Heretics, he had only heard about them from Lily. Bonnie assumed Lily spoke about him too to them.

"If he's a problem, take care of him then," Nora scoffed, stating the obvious.

Bonnie stared out the window. "I already tried. A couple of times, it didn't work."

"Then you're not trying hard enough."
