The car picked up speed towards the town that only brought supernatural trouble as the clock turned. "How can they take their magic back? You need siphoners for that and in the end, it goes to the siphon, not the coven."
Kai shrugged. "Technically, that is true but you know the relationship between magic and nature. There's going to be some sort of loophole. My father will find that to get his magic back to do god-knows-what to me." Kai ran through the speed limit and Bonnie wondered when a cop car would pull them over. "Or..."
Bonnie turned her head to him, worry marking her face. This would have been the second time the kids have been in danger of kidnapping, both Kai's fault. Once this happens, Bonnie knew that Ric would never approve of whatever was forming between the two of them. "Or what?"
Kai gripped the wheel. "Since I'm out of the equation, they might go after the girls first because of their siphoning abilities. Although the magic should technically get absorbed by the twins, they might try a Dispergo incantation."
"A what?"
Kai shook his head. "I've only heard about it briefly, it's one of the ancient texts that the coven has stored. All you need to know is that they can't get to the kids."
Bonnie sank in her seat, holding a hand to her forehead. It was heating up and she closed her eyes. "Can't you tell them to stop? You're the leader and trying to overthrow that must be--"
"They're humans, there's no authority I have of them. And if they store the kids to merge or worse, speed up the process somehow, I won't be the leader any longer." Eventually, the town emerged and Bonnie swung out, phone in hand.
She tried to dial Ric and Jo first but both did not answer. She tried Caroline, Matt and Jeremy but they didn't respond either. "Nobody is answering," Bonnie muttered as the line to Damon's phone rang. The town was now coated in a thin sheet of snow, small parts falling down.
Kai didn't say anything, jumping back into the car. A couple of civilians were walking in the town square, laughing and drinking hot chocolate with friends and family. Bonnie sat back in her seat as he pulled up to the Salvatore mansion. Bonnie reached the door, trying to open it but only found it locked.
Kai appeared, flicking his hand. "Patentibus." It swung open, slamming against the wall. Bonnie sighed and took a step into the cold house. She glanced around, confused. Kai was right behind her, closing the door once more with his hand.
Bonnie began to jog around all the rooms until she entered Damon's. She expected for it to be empty, just like the others but when she spotted Elena, face grim and pale, her mind wavered. Bonnie dove for her best friend, jumping onto the bed and hugging the familiar face. "Elena."
Elena grunted, coughing when Bonnie wrapped her hands around her frail body. "Bonnie, oh my god, I've missed you."
Bonnie pulled back, trying to suck in the tears that dripped down her face. Eventually, she let them spill and smiled brightly at her. "You're back."
Caroline was suddenly present in the room, sitting on the bed along with the two. "The gang's back together," she sniffled, turning away when her eyes got glassy.
Bonnie was confused, wondering why the room was so grim. Everyone else, Ric, Jeremy, Matt, Tyler, Valerie were silent. Damon and Stefan were nowhere to be found and Bonnie wondered where Kai had gone to. She turned back to Elena, her sick face more vibrant than ever. Bonnie wasn't alarmed, Valerie had said that the side effects of the spell would be like this. That her deceased body had to get used to its old soul once more.
Ric stepped up, hands in pockets with a sad frown. "Bonnie...you've missed quite a lot."
Something occurred to Bonnie like a blow to the heart. She had been gone for the past week. Why...why did you not look for me? she wondered. Bonnie wiped her tears and cleared her throat. "What did I miss? I'm just in time for Elena, she just needs to recover."
"When the girls held the Crown of Mortem, it left scars. Not only on their fingers but in their minds. Ever since Elena has been back, they've been having vivid nightmares of all of Elena's terrible memories and it's gotten out of hand," Valerie explained. "The only option is to bring things back to how they were. This was Elena's choice."
Bonnie slowly turned to Elena, registering the words. Elena wanted to die again so that the twins could live a somewhat normal life. She smiled with warmth. "I think it's time for us all to move on but now...we have a proper goodbye."
Bonnie shook her head, the feeling to laugh at the ridiculous joke they were all playing on her bursting at its seams. "No. No. I can fix this, we can figure it out. We all know that there's always a looph--"
Matt shook his head. "Not this time. We searched for answers, a solution but the best and safest option is to let Elena--"
"No. You didn't give me a chance to find the solution. I can do this for Elena, let me do this." It was almost a plead and tears formed in her eyes again, only they weren't ones of joy.
Elena held Bonnie's hand. "Bonnie..."
She sprang out of it, tumbling from the bed. "I need my grandma's grimoire. There must be a spell to somehow stop this. I know there is, I can fix this, Elena."
Caroline was shaking her head, smiling sadly at Elena. "She's made her choice and we respect it."
Bonnie remained silent, trying to piece together what was unraveling in front of her. "I...I just got you back," her voice broke and she tried to keep it in check, swallowing deep.
Elena nodded, holding her arms out for Bonnie. Before anything else was happening, crashing and thunder erupted from downstairs. Bonnie's mind was so clouded, she wasn't thinking when she sprinted to find the source of the ruckus. When she reached the living room, it was like the air had been sucked out her lungs. Kai, hair tousled, was pinned under Stefan with brute force. Damon, across the room, had the end of the broken chair slowly spearing into his abdomen at the hand of Kai's magic.
