Kai chuckled, clicking his tongue. "Is this what family means? To jump off a cliff when you still have a life, a future, behind you? Because I am glad I killed the majority of mine to never find out."
"It is much more than that," Rebekah elaborated. "It's the feeling you get when you see your loved ones smile, the feeling you get when you see them happy. It is the knowledge that you will do whatever it takes to keep that expression intact. Family is a bond, a requirement to protect your blood, your friends, by all means necessary. Family is sacrifice, pain, suffering. Family is laughter, joy, happiness. Our family will never break, not with the love we've built. Our walls are enforced enough to slaughter enemies and vanquish demons. Our palace is decked with enough jewels to make us true Kings and Queens and our weapons? Sharp enough to cut the blade of life and death. We will never die, not in memory. Our enemies will remember us, our friends will remember us, our lovers will remember us. We are Mikaelson's and we die as Mikaelson's. Our name will continue to tremble the world, our blood will continue to poison rivers because nobody is going to forget. We may be broken but we are strong. Powerful, conniving and cunning as the monsters in their stories. But we are not just that. We are mothers, we are fathers, uncles, aunts, brothers, sisters. We are Mikaelson's. And that is why we will stand side by side to protect each other."
Elijah picked up his sister's hand, interlocking their fingers tightly. "Always and forever." Rebekah turned to Klaus, picking up his hand as she repeated the slogan. Klaus turned to Hayley who then turned to Bonnie.
"I would die 100 times over just to have you standing here alive, in front of me," Bonnie sniffled with a broken smile, nodding to herself.
She faced Kai, holding a hand out. Only he didn't take it and leaned in. He cupped her cheek to whisper his final words, erupting a breathy chuckle from her chest. She wiped her tears and shook her head to brush away the locks of hair that curtained her face. Kai kissed her nose and then pulled back to pick up her hand. "Always and forever," he concluded. And then the spell began.
"Absorber et fracturer le démon, le monstre, l'esprit," Bonnie chanted. The lights were flickering already, glass breaking and chill air sweeping in. "Briser le vaisseau, briser l'entité."
"Absorber et fracturer le démon, le monstre, l'esprit," Kai chorused, eyes closed. He gripped Bonnie's hand, cherishing the last moments of her small warm palm. "Briser le vaisseau, briser l'entité." From the difficult beginning, the impossible friendship and terrifying love to this moment. Family. Kai never thought that the word would bring such frantic joy to his mind. He knew that if their child had lived, he wouldn't be the only one to teach her to protect herself from the savageness of the world. Klaus, Elijah, Rebekah, even Kol, who he only met briefly, would have been right behind him. Kai preferred to be independent, kept in his square. It's why he always wanted Bonnie for himself because he wasn't ready to step out of that box with her. He always had it in his mind that he was meant to be alone. He was the first of his kind, the first sociopathic siphoner. A genetic error. And it made him into a monster, a man who would break the world for the amusement of seeing something so pure and poisoned shatter. But now...he was amongst the first vampires, the first witches, the first hybrid, the first tribrid. He wasn't alone. A family, even if he didn't have time to start one of his own with the love of his life, he felt happy that he had people who accepted the real him, the rawness and the overbearing extent he would go for those he rarely cared for. A family. He would have laughed a couple of months ago. Probably fooled around a bit and pulled out a couple of hearts, maybe listened to the tune of snapping necks. But now he smiled and squeezed Bonnie's hand again. But now he held unto that bond that they were all linked by and finally stepped across the line.
