And that's exactly what happened. The next days were a mixture of negative pregnancy tests, each attempt lighting a smile on Kai's face as he waited outside the washroom. And that light broke when they both stared at the single line, rejecting her pregnancy.
Meanwhile, Klaus was managing the city, making himself look like a glorified king in the eyes of the vampires and werewolves after he granted them the rings that nullified their weaknesses. But so far, no signs of this threat arose. The Mikaelson's kept their eyes and ears open, drilling Bonnie for more information. It was estimated that they would fall one by friend, one by family and one by foe so they kept their trust to a minimum.
Bonnie walked into the living room at the compound to find Klaus setting up a painting station. Over the weeks, they discovered that art helped him express his anger in other forms other than physically fighting. She crossed her arms, leaning against the wall. It was a full moon tonight and she assumed that he was preparing to capture the cityscape with the stroke of his brush.
"Marcel and Diego tell me that you're literally using vampire blood for your paint palette," Bonnie said.
Klaus didn't glance up. "The shade is much more exquisite. And it's a fate due to the...misbehaving individuals."
Bonnie shook her head, not surprised at all. "Where's Hayley?"
"Went out to see Hope with Elijah." The brush caressed the canvas, an ink blue smearing the page.
"And you? You haven't gone to see your daughter at all since you sent her away."
"I've been busy confirming that our streets are safe enough for her to return. Then I'll be able to see her every day," Klaus bite his lip, wrist frantically moving as the seconds ticked by. You could tell that the word danger and his daughter in the same sentence triggered him. "This is the worse part of the game. The silence, the fear that your opponent knows something you don't know, banking strength to strike in a spot where you're not expecting."
Bonnie nodded with understanding. To live with the constant fear of having something pure and small being taken away from you must be as fearful as it sounded. If she had to live with the fact that Kai might die due to an unknown cause right around the corner, she wouldn't be able to sleep at all. "Goodnight." Bonnie swiveled around on her heel. But the faint fracturing sound froze her. Followed by clipped breathing. "Are—" She turned as she said and her eyes widened when she saw the hybrid on his knees, eyes glinted gold. "What's happening?"
A yell ruptured from his throat, a bone visibly cracking under his skin. He bumped into his canvas, the art station stumbling down at the same time his canines pulled out.
Bonnie approached his side, placing a hand on his back to comfort him through the pain. "I—"
His head snapped up, veins crackling under his eyes and bright eyes shining through her soul. "Leave."
Bonnie tripped back and realized that he was turning. It didn't make sense, Klaus had complete control over his werewolf side—his transformation became more intense and Bonnie began to spot fur. In seconds, Klaus was a rabid animal in front of her, his gaze fixed on her like she was a target. She backed up, knocking over a table with a vase.
It shattered but that didn't avert his attention. Klaus growled before pouncing, mouth agape to show the sharp fangs. Bonnie's wrist flicked and she muttered, "Repousser."
The wolf was thrown to the side, slammed against the brick wall. Paintings fell down, furniture broke and more glass shattered. He recovered quickly, standing on his hind legs.
Bonnie panted as she chanted, "Affaiblir ses entrailles." The wolf was already on its way towards her again but it stopped, a loud painful whine echoing in the room.
The door slammed open, revealing Kai. This distracted Bonnie for a second but gave the wolf an opening to leap onto the witch. She screamed when his teeth sank into her shoulder, pushing Bonnie to the ground with the momentum of the jump. Kai gaped at the scene before him and instantly leaped into action.
Before he could do anything, the wolf repelled away from Bonnie immediately the moment her blood coated his tongue. Klaus wretched, heaving and fell back. Both witches watched as the supernatural turned back to his original form. Bonnie held a hand to her neck, ignoring the stinging pain. And then she blinked and Klaus's body disappeared.
"What just happened?" Kai demanded, falling to his knees to examine the leaking wound.
Bonnie swallowed, catching her breath. "This is the attack. Whoever the prophecy was speaking about is doing this."
"All of this preparation and we weren't even ready when they actually attacked," Kai said, his fingers drenched in her blood. "Soigner." Slowly, the wound healed and Bonnie managed to stand to her feet.
In those seconds, vampires and Diego barged into the room, eyes wide at the mess. "Call Elijah and Hayley, tell them to get here as soon as possible," Bonnie ordered.
One of the men on Diego's right did just that, stepping away. Diego shook his head, eyes examining the room again. "What the hell happened?"
"Klaus is gone. Tell the wolves to keep an eye out for him and make sure the vampires hunt down this witch," Bonnie paced around the room. The instant role to take charge was almost unnoticeable and Diego found himself following the command.
The vampire on the phone from earlier returned. "Elijah is not answering and Hayley says he's missing. Hope is fine."
Bonnie's nose flared and she began to pace even faster, hand in her hair and other on her hip. The vampire took his dismissal, leaving the room with stressful tension.
"What next?" Kai asked, adjusting his posture to lean on one leg. "It's obvious they are targeting the direct Mikaelson's. It explains why Rebekah is MIA and I assume they got all the other coffined siblings."
Bonnie halted, an idea arising. "Prepare a spell. We're going to find out what the hell those witches are doing with my family."
