dead, gone and useless

The sun had lifted when the family returned home, blood-soaked to the ends of their hair.

"Would someone tell me what the hell that was? I didn't expect to wake up in the middle of a witch brawl," Kol said with annoyance, sinking into one of the chairs. He gave a vampire a pointed glare. "Whiskey on the rocks, please." The vampire did not move. "Did you not hear me? Clearly one ear isn't enough for you to comprehend the basic phrases, shall I take the other?"

"Kol, please compose yourself. You've only returned for a couple of hours, do uphold a decent impression," Elijah pleaded. "And they aren't butlers, they are bodyguards."

"But I do want to know. What happened to get us such in a quarrel?" Rebekah laid back, crossing her legs. "I mean you guys didn't look for me for weeks, I assume something much more important than your sister getting kidnapped diverted your attention?"

"Niklaus knows how to piss off the fair share of the world. A couple of witch covens isn't much of a shocker. He's as broken as I remember. He was three centuries ago and he is now," Finn spat.

Kol chuckled, throwing a goofy grin across his face. "He's still the little sad boy, crying wolf that his father never loved him. Technically, we're only half-siblings, we owe nothing to you--"

It all happened so quickly that you would have needed vampire vision to see. Klaus flitted rapidly to his eldest brother, plunging a bladed dagger into his heart. Finn released an agonizing cry, his skin crackling grey once more. Kol was already flitting out the door but Elijah stepped into his path. Klaus pulled out the other dagger, shoving it deep into his pulsating heart.

In seconds, the two were desiccated dead on the floor. Bonnie flinched and Rebekah only poured a glass of whiskey in the silence. "I think I like being amongst his favourite."

Klaus straightened, motioning to the stand by vampires. "Take them to their coffins."

Kai chuckled, shaking his head. "And they said I treated my family unjustifiably. It's perfectly common to teach siblings a couple of hard lessons. Whether it's giving them eternal sleep or whatever the other options are. Helps to be creative."

"Kol is a destructive weapon that I am not prepared to release into my city, not yet. And Fin...I'm not particularly in the mood to have him remind us all of how inadequate we are. I'm quite considerate if you think about it," Klaus shrugged and Kai only nodded in understanding.

Bonnie shook her head in disbelief. "The prophecy passed. We're...we're safe."

Hayley sighed heavily, massaging her temples. "Finally. I thought we had to wait for 4 months to get another hint."

"But I'm just confused." Kai crossed his arms. "The spell should have worked."

"They might have gotten the spell wrong, said a wrong word, gathered the wrong ingredients," Elijah suggested as he paced around the room.

"They didn't. Through the Initial Conjuration, I know that they didn't. The spell should've worked," Bonnie stated firmly. Everything was working how it should have but...

"Well I don't reckon you have the answers to our undeserved prayers?" Rebekah mused, twirling the alcohol in her glass.

"Are you sure that all your family members were accounted for the spell?" Kai questioned and this silence them.

"We had a younger brother. Henri. He was assassinated by untamed beasts neighbouring our town when we were younger. When we weren't vampires," Klaus answered, tapping his fingers at the armrest as if the memory brought nervous distress.

"Is there a chance that he is why the spell didn't work? It required all the Mikaelson children, maybe—" Elijah was saying.

Kai clicked his tongue. "Not a chance. This Henri guy is dead, gone and useless. It must have been something else."

"It doesn't matter now," Rebekah shrugged, throwing back the whiskey and slammed the glass down. She turned to Hayley. "So what have I missed?"

Hayley grinned, shrugging. "Not much, only everything."

Rebekah's eyes twinkled with joy and excitement. "Tell me, do I have a niece?"

Hayley embarked on all the stories she had about Hope, how her daughter said mama before dada, how she spent her days playing in the mud with Cami. The group dispersed quickly, leaving Bonnie and Kai to return to their room in their apartment. She was tired and by the time she sank into the bed, she was out cold.

*

A sudden quivering woke Bonnie up from her sleep. Her right arm was jerking frantically and faint light flashes of an image burned at the back of her eyes. She slipped from the bed, searching the room for paper and coloured pencils.

The rustle and clatter woke Kai and he asked with his tired eyes, "BonBon?"

Bonnie was panting heavily now, arranging the sheets of paper on the floor and began drawing with the black pencil. The quick scratch of the pencil echoed in the room and Kai loomed over her shoulder, watching as the facial features of a woman surfaced.

He recognized a couple of parts, Klaus's eyes, Elijah's nose, Rebekah's chin and eyes. The image was pulling together and once Bonnie stopped, a woman with natural dirty blonde hair stared back. Green spheres, sharp cheekbones and nose and thin rosy lips. In the center of her heart seemed to a be blue incandescent light.

Bonnie couldn't stare at her artwork for much longer because a churn in her stomach made her spring to the washroom. She threw the toilet seat back and vomited the contents out with a hard heave. She did so for the last minute or so until she felt like she was on the brink of passing out. Kai was at her side through it all, holding her hair back and using his cold hands to warm her hot forehead.

Once she recovered from the vomiting, she wiped her mouth. Kai soundlessly helped her to her feet and they returned to the room, staring at the unknown face of the stranger.

"Another vision?"

Bonnie shook her head. "It's an answer."

"To what?"

"Why the spell didn't work. Not all the siblings were accounted for. Klaus has a sister out in the world that none of them know about."

*

Bonnie struggled to return to sleep, most of her night full of sweating and headaches. When the sun rose, she found herself back at the toilet bowl, vomiting constantly. Parts of her body was rolling with ache, nausea and fatigue throughout the morning.

"I want to tell them about what happened last night," Bonnie was saying, tucked in the couch with covers over her body.

"But?" Kai said at the stove, stirring in some soup to try and chase away her sickness.

"But I don't feel well. It must be some after-affect of the spells those witches did on me," she sighed, flipping through the book, Ace of Spades.

Kai poured out a steaming bowl, bringing it to her side. "I'm glad that you're seeing through my eyes, BonBon. You need rest." She nodded, smiling at him. Kai leaned in and kissed her forehead. "So take the day."

As the hours ticked by, Bonnie's sickness rose. It wasn't too late, just a little deep in the afternoon. Before she could consider dipping at the compound, Kai was leaning against the wall with a smirk. Bonnie rolled her eyes and returned the smile. "What do you want now?"

"You know what time it is," he hinted with a wink. Bonnie checked the time and her heart skipped a beat.

Another pregnancy test. She stood up with a sigh. "I think we know what the answer is going to be. Kai...what if I can't do it?" Her breathing shortened, waiting for the ball to drop, for his face to drench in utter disappointment.

Kai only pulled her in, kissing the top of her head. "It wouldn't be the end of the world. At least we tried. And we have other options. Like kidnapping children."

She sighed with relief, embracing him. She held him close, relishing in the comfort before pulling away. She grabbed the stick and made her way to the washroom. "This might be the last time we check."
