Bonnie shoved the comfort food into her mouth, nodding at each approved bite. "I can't believe I've never tried this out, it's so good."
Kai dipped his fries in ketchup, chuckling at her pleasure. "I've tried almost everything on the menu and to say...that is near the bottom of my favourites list."
Bonnie's eyes widened in shock as she sipped on her sparkly water. "How?" She shook her head, taking another bite of the potato, full of cheddar cheese, garlic and much more exotic spices. "It's delicious." Bonnie rolled her eyes back. "I've never been so hungry before."
"I know right? That's how I feel like when I've freshly siphoned magic from a source." Kai licked his lips, wiping the remnants of the food from it. "It's probably because your magic all came rushing back, demanding more energy from you. Thus the hunger."
Bonnie had stopped listening to him at some point and continued to scarf down her lunch. She was so invested in the dish, she didn't notice the blonde waitress that arrived at the table. "Bonnie?" Both of their heads jerked towards Matt, in his work clothes and a towel tossed across his back.
Bonnie forced the food down her mouth quickly, caught off guard. "Matt. I...uh. I thought your shifts were only in the evening." She followed his gaze to Kai, who was leaning back on his chair coyly.
"What's he doing here?" Matt snarled, pointing viscously at Kai.
Kai waved. "Hey, Matty. I have one question for you too. Now that everyone has graduated from school and all, why do you still work at the Mystic Grill? Why haven't you found a job or like...disappeared from the face of the earth?"
"I stick around for those who need it. Only God knows how much Mystic Falls needs help and a little extra aid in the community can never hurt. Which is what makes me better than you because I put myself in danger every day for people I don't even know," Matt ranted.
Kai snorted. "Maybe you should try something like a sheriff, something more heroic, not a freaking waitress. But I do find it funny that you somehow think you're better than me?"
"Better because after what you did to El--"
Kai rose abruptly, grabbing Matt by the collar and Bonnie jumped back. "Why do you keep bringing it up? Some of us are trying to move on, Matty."
Matt grunted as the blood vessels in his brain began to pop. Kai tossed him on the table, people around the diner glancing in suspicion. Matt wheezed, head-turning a cherry red and eyes bulging. "Kai."
He sank back down to his seat, taking a generous gulp of his soda pop as Matt struggled. Eventually, he clicked his tongue at Bonnie's disapproval and Matt stopped writhing, the pain gone. He held a hand to his neck, looking at Kai with disgust and Bonnie with concern. Matt rapidly pulled away from the duo on what seemed to be a date.
Bonnie sighed deeply as she watched him go, suddenly losing appetite for her lunch. "Now he probably thinks I've sided with you in all your evilness."
"Would that be so bad? Knowing that whatever I do, whatever you do, I will always be there to protect you?"
Bonnie scoffed. "It's the other way around. Now that my magic is back, I'm back to being Bonnie freaking Bennett."
"Actually, your magic isn't all back just yet. You aren't doing in big spells anytime soon. The most you can do is...float a few feathers."
Bonnie chuckled at the irony. The first time she confirmed she even had magic was when she made the feathers in her pillow float. With Elena. Bonnie smiled to herself, anticipating the return of her friend. Once Elena was home, the trio would be restored. And once her full magic came back, she was going to find a way to kill Rebekah Mikaelson.
It didn't take long for her phone to ring in her pocket. Bonnie reached for it, answering when she realized it was Stefan. "Is someone else awake?"
"I think there is a problem," Stefan answered on the other line.
"What? What happened?" Bonnie stood much higher on her seat, alert and Kai narrowed his eyes. He wondered when would be the next day that he and Bonnie could be alone, no Mystic Falls heroes trying to interfere. He also wondered if he should take care of that problem. Kai shook his head, resuming to finishing his plate.
"I don't know, just get here." That was all Stefan demanded when the phone hung up.
Bonnie sighed, tucking her phone away and rising from her seat. Kai held a hand out in confusion. "Whoa, where are you going?"
"There's trouble at the Mystic Cemetery. Stefan is afraid that something is happening with the spell."
"So? What are you going to do about it? You don't always have to go when they call."
Bonnie rolled her eyes. "I do. That's how friendship works. I wouldn't be shocked if you didn't know." She didn't even give him time to respond, Bonnie already stumbled out of the Grill. She took the car, not waiting for Kai as she drove out into the cemetery. Once she arrived, Bonnie jogged in, waiting for the news that something went wrong. "What happened?"
Valerie was already there, quickly examining the standing sleeping bodies linked to Elena. By now, the blood had gotten dry. Stefan turned to her, eager to explain. "They're slowly dying."
Bonnie's brows furrowed and she took a step closer to Caroline to confirm it herself. Her arm, which was connected to Elena's leg, was rippling with grey vines. This was usually the process of when a vampire was dying or dead. Caroline's arm was the same as Elena's leg. "No. We did everything, the spell worked. Kai and I got out it means that they can get out too."
"I don't understand it either, none of this part was mentioned in the book," Valerie commented.
"Do you think they're on a running clock? Maybe there is a certain amount of time you're supposed to be in there," Stefan suggested, arms crossed.
"If that's the case..." Valerie trailed off.
"And they don't even know it...they might never come back," Bonnie finished.
