Nora flitted to his face, grabbing his neck in a threatening manner. Kai choked, head slamming against the wall with a thud. Caroline was right behind her, prepared to snap his neck. "If you believe that toying with us at this moment is the best gamble to not end your life right here, you're sadly mistaken," Nora snarled.
Kai struggled for air and Nora loosened, waiting for him to speak. "I'm not screwing around. I've known for a while now."
"Let him speak," Elena ordered but Nora did not listen. One look from Caroline had her recoiling back.
Kai coughed, holding a hand to his throat. He had no magic currently, it seemed like the chains at the bar had sucked him dry. "As I was saying..." He gave a pointed glare to Nora and straightened himself. He then turned to Bonnie, her face the clear portrait of confusion. "When Bonnie blasted herself into sleep even though she had no magic, I suspected something was off. I started off small so I took a bit of her blood and gave it to human doctors. As I expected, nothing concerning came back. I then gave her blood to a couple of witch friends of mine to determine what was wrong. They said there was a bad aura in the blood but they couldn't find out what. They said that the only type of witch that could identify what was wrong was a Heretic. So I--"
"That's why you needed Malcolm," Nora concluded, eyes connecting with Mary Louise.
"Ding, ding, ding. Once I forced the idiot to examine the blood, and the best possible answer he could give me was that the owner of the blood was dying internally, mentally and physically," Kai sighed. "He also said that if I wanted more information, I should ask Valerie because she used to study magic illness back in your day, whatever that means."
The room was eerily silent until Bonnie broke it. It shocked them all when she laughed, completely with amusement. Her sides ached but it only made her laugh harder. "So I'm going to die?" She snorted, laughing even more. Her legs started to tremble and her arms became numb. She couldn't even feel Elena anymore.
Elena tried to comfort her but Bonnie didn't return it. "We can fix this. We call Valerie and we figure it out, just like we always do."
"I have one question," Stefan asked. "What caused this? Why is she 'sick' all of a sudden?"
Kai cocked his head. "You think I did this?"
"You'd do anything to get us to trust you again. We're your little playground and you're out of toys."
Kai chuckled. "I'm not like that. This type of thing is terminal."
"Which is why we need to find Valerie ASAP and not spend time chatting about it now," Caroline said with urgency. The room agreed, most dispersing.
All that was left was Nora, Mary Louise and Kai. Bonnie was now transferred to the living room couch, the others pacing around the room.
"It must have been from that magical scream. It wasn't meant to happen but it did so magic is asking you to pay up," Kai spoke, taking a seat in front of her.
"No. When Lily forced Valerie to study magic sickness, we were forced to learn the basics along the way. From what I've retained, it could either be from a family sickness, a curse or..." Mary Louise trailed off.
"Or what?" Nora demanded, planting her hands on the couch Bonnie was laying on. She was struggling not doze of because something told her that if she fell asleep, she wouldn't come back.
"Or there is some sort of block between her mind and body. Magic works in a way that everything must be in order and if there's a slight hiccup, your life could pay the cost," she finished.
Kai hid it well but when Mary Louise said that, something ripped in his chest. The two continued talking and Kai went to his own world. The only thing that he could come up with that could fit the whole 'block between the mind and body' situation was the memory wipe. He had told Sybil to wipe a certain part of her mind, the memory of Enzo forever gone. But her heart would remember the sentiment and Kai suspected that there was where the issue was. With her heart saying one thing and her mind saying another...that was why magic was hurting her.
Kai's body began to sweat as he realized that it was all his fault. If he had let it all go, if he had accepted that Bonnie didn't have any feelings for him, none of this would have happened. But then many other things wouldn't have happened. Kai found it hard to concentrate, a newfound type of anger and remorse building within him.
Bonnie sensed this, narrowing her eyes over him. She didn't know if it was because she was unwell but there was no more filter in her thoughts. He's so beautiful. Bonnie blinked, finding herself lost in his eyes, his face, his gaze. Kai stared back, body filled with guilt and Bonnie's filled with adornment. More than ever, she wanted to reach for his face, carress his cheek, kiss his lips, moan in his ears but it seemed all too far. She craved to sit in his arms and listen to him laugh and watch him smile but there was a wall. A wall that tortured them both and she wondered why she kept it up for so long.
Bonnie's heart slowed as admitted to herself, to her mind, to her body. She knew why she was sick now. The block between her mind and body was the denial that she...that she was in love with him. Bonnie was surprised that the extremities of the sentiment was so powerful, it would bring her to death because what she felt was out of the world. It was like what she felt for Enzo. But combined with what she felt for Elena, Caroline, her Grams, Damon, all her friends at the same time. It was overwhelming and her heart had learned to become addicted. But her mind would always be accustomed to seeing a monster through her eyes. It was never going to work. Even bending fate was not enough to bring them together, something always turned the route. And when she entered his mind, when Bonnie saw all the pain and anguish he had to survive, it was like the final piece slid into place. It wasn't about fixing Kai Parker, it was about loving him.
Bonnie's blinking slowed and this time, she let sleep take her. Because out of it all, she knew it was too late.
