what magic wants, magic gets

The thorns on the Crown of Mortem weren't just sharp. Once sat upon a deceased vampire body, not only does it draw blood, it opens a door into the dead mind. Although Elena's soul was long gone, her memories will forever stay encrypted in her brain, it's one of the main reasons why she functioned and thought the way she did when she turned into a vampire. The process to bring back the soul wasn't an easy task. One witch, one vampire, one human and one werewolf were the only ones allowed into the dead mind. Once they tunneled through the opening of the mind, they are placed in different parts of Elena's terrible memories. You would then relive it over and over until you found a way to change it. Valerie had explained it all, very wary about which parts of the myth were true or false.

"And where do the twins come in?" Ric asked, carrying Josie on his hip while Lizzie dozed off in Jo's arms. They had spent hours in the museum, it was now dark outside and well past closing hours. Caroline compelled the guards to let them stay and they were all currently eating dinner.

"It says here that the ones that are bred from the fuse of bond and magic will be the ones who set the Crown of Mortem on the body. It won't work otherwise," Valerie read off the tag. The crown was in the glass enclosure.

"But Kai and I can do that," Jo pointed out, taking a quick bite from her sandwich.

Kai, who was dozing off and drooling on the table, jolted awake from Bonnie's kick. "Mmh?"

"The problem is, you don't have magic and Kai already did the merge," Caroline said, taking a deep breath.

"Okay so the girls only need to place the crown on Elena's body?" Ric clarified.

"That sounds awfully sketchy. Why does it have to be them?" Stefan pondered. Damon had gone off into the building to search for some bourbon.

"Beats me, what magic wants, magic gets." Bonnie shrugged, attempting to conceal her incoming sneeze.

"So we need one witch, one vampire, one human and one werewolf? Caroline will be the vampire--" Valerie spoke and Stefan snapped his head to her rapidly.

"No, it should be me," he ordered.

Caroline stood straight on her seat. "No, it's me. I'm her best friend."

"And I haven't seen her in five months."

Damon appeared with a bottle, grunting as he sat down. He rolled his eyes, batting a hand away. "Rock, paper, scissors. I'm obviously the human going in."

"And I'm the witch going," Bonnie concluded, taking a sip of her fifth cup of tea.

"Except, you're not a witch. You don't have magic," Kai injected. "Did you know that if you don't meet the requirements of the spell, it can expel you straight to Limbo? Or even hell? It's what my teachers would say when I didn't pay attention in class."

"But I need to go in. Elena is my best friend," Bonnie said. "There's no way I'm not going to help bring her back. My magic is somewhere, I just need to find it."

"If the spell works," Valerie cut in.

"There might be a way around that. You're basically human without your magic--"

"And I'm the human going in," Damon repeated loudly, a tone of warning in his voice.

Kai ignored him and continued on. "And I'm a siphoner, I need to get magic, I don't have it naturally. My idea is to siphon off a large vessel of magic, that way when I bind us, the magic can withhold both of us. In conclusion, 2+2=4 and we have 2 bodies of one witch."

"Bind you guys together? Are you out of your mind? I'm not letting you connect yourself with Bonnie and get into Elena's memories," Caroline exclaimed, scoffing to herself. She spoke with her hands, nearly knocking off her mug of coffee.

"She can speak for herself, Caroline," Kai mused, stirring his cold cup of hot chocolate. He reached for a sugar cookie and munched on it.

"He's right, Caroline. This is my decision and I agree with Kai. If this is the only way for me to help Elena, so be it," she concluded, sipping on the final drops of her tea. Bonnie then curled herself up, trying to find warmth.

"Bonnie, he killed Enzo," Ric reminded and Kai flinched back, waiting for Bonnie to feel the terrible pain he caused.

Bonnie sat there, thinking for a moment. Her gaze was a haze of confusion and she wondered why she believed Rebekah was the one to kill him. Must have been the side effects of Sybil's mind control, my memories might have been all jumbled up. She cleared her throat, adjusting herself in her seat. "Good. I think we can all agree Enzo was a pain in our asses."

The way they all jutted their neck out in shock was nearly concerning. All eyes then fell to Kai and he shrugged. Damon rose. "What did you do to her?"

"I did nothing. It must have been Sybil." Half-truth, half lie. Kai didn't really want to find the difference.

"So she's just forgotten that she--"

"That I what?" Bonnie cut off Caroline, looking into everyone's worried faces.

Caroline shook her head. "Nothing." Stefan turned to her with a questioning glare. At that moment, she made a decision. Although the memories of all that happened between Enzo and Bonnie were still hers, it was all over. Enzo was dead at the hands of Kai and Caroline knew that it would bring more pain onto her best friend, especially after what she survived after Elena, Damon and Sybil. It was best that she forgot the greatest pain of all, even though Caroline knew it was wrong in so many ways. She also wondered how Bonnie was so chill with the fact that Kai had killed Elena as well. Did he make her believe it was an accident during Sybil's control? Bonnie doesn't forgive easily...what happened? Caroline thought.

"Anyways. We obviously don't have a werewolf in our midst, someone needs to contact Tyler Lockwood," Valerie said, drawing the attention away from Kai and Bonnie.

Ric already had his cellphone out. "I'll let Matt know, I don't think any of us have Tyler's number other than him."

"Now that that's settled, we need one more thing from you, Kai," Damon said, twirling the liquid in his glass. "Where's Elena's body?"

To that, Bonnie turned to him with a suspicious glare and Kai cursed the vampire herself.
