my own breed

They sat on the couch, resting in each other's silence. Bonnie's head nestled on Kai's lap and he toyed with her soft brown hair, smiling to himself. He knew that this--this was something he wanted to hold onto forever. She made him feel different, made him want to be better only for her. It was to a point where he felt more close to her than he has ever been with family, with anyone. And Kai knew that when the moment came, he would protect it with all he had, no matter the obstacles or challenges. He never wanted to let go, all Kai wanted to do was remain where he was with the girl who was trying hard to see behind the demons that taunted him at night. It was crazy to remember how his feelings for the Bennett witch only formed when a part of Luke Parker's soul merged with his own. But when the effects of that faded out, the emotions had spiraled out of control and eventually, they turned real.

"What are you thinking about?" Bonnie wondered, playing with a thread she picked from the couch. The fireplace was lively, the flames climbing high with crackling energy. The snow had started falling heavy again and it was very cold in the cabin.

"Nothing," he sighed as she turned her head to face him. "What are you thinking about?"

"Elena. My friends, Mystic Falls. Valerie," Bonnie said slowly. Her eyes dropped from his, avoiding the look she knew he was going to give her. Hate, detest, loathing. She wished a lot of things were different. That way, everybody could be happy.

He was silent for a while, staring into the fire. "They're bad for you, you know. You don't see it but I do."

Bonnie shook her head, adjusting herself in her position. "I don't know what you're seeing but that...what we have for each other is love," she concluded. Some part of her mind told her not to trust the word of a sociopath. Who knew what sorts of delusions he painted to make himself feel better.

Kai didn't feel like fighting on the topic anymore, it always ended terribly. "So we're spending Christmas with each other?"

Bonnie shrugged. "How long do plan on keeping me locked in here?"

Christmas Eve came around the corner faster than you'd expect and when Bonnie woke to the distinct smell of gingerbread, she was up from the bed in an instant. She immediately thought of Elena, burning the poor cookies and blaming it on Jeremy for not checking the oven when it was her job. The memory faded when she realized it was probably Kai baking goods. To think of it, they hadn't really spoken about what they would do on Christmas itself. She hoped Kai would let her return home.

Bonnie's bare feet touched the cold wooden floor. The wintry season kissed her skin and she wrapped her arms around herself. The tank top and sweatpants weren't cutting it so Bonnie decided to pick up one of Kai's long sleeve shirts and made her way out to the kitchen.

When she arrived, Kai was just pulling out the golden tray of cookies, smoke coming out the oven. He placed it down and that was when Bonnie realized he wasn't wearing any oven mitts. Her eyes widened as Kai moved along like it was nothing. "Wh-why aren't you wearing gloves?"

Kai's head jerked up at her arrival, taking in her attire. He smiled before answering. "After you get used to the pain, it's not so bad."

Bonnie was speechless as she approached, staring at his hanging hand. It was blistering red but he didn't seem bothered by it in the least. She narrowed her eyes, raising them to his gaping ones. "Oh." Without much thought, Bonnie reached into the cookie tray, later recoiling back with the burning sensation. "Ow."

Kai chuckled, picking up a searing hot baked good and taking a large bite. "I would wait a bit for it to cool down."

"You're strange," Bonnie concluded, sliding onto the counter.

"Right? It's like I'm my own breed, one of a kind, ya know? I've never heard of someone as iconic as Kai Parker," he gloated, wiping the excess crumbs from his lips and hands.

Bonnie laughed, shaking her head. Kai enjoyed the sound and it made his insides flip in ways he didn't want to admit. "So what are we doing today? I was hoping that we could go back to Mys--"

"Actually, I have plans. Well, plans that involve the both of us and you not going to Mystic Falls so that your friends can use you again, which usually results in--" Bonnie realized he was rambling, spewing unnecessary things. He was nervous and Bonnie was shocked at that. Kai was controlled, usually amused and carefree. Not tripping on his sentences.

"Okay," she answered bluntly and he stopped. "Where are we going?"

"How about you wait and see?"

The town sign of Iowa passed by quickly and Bonnie's head swivelled to Kai in confusion. "Am I supposed to understand what we're doing here?"

Kai didn't answer, quickly pulling up to a large mansion. It looked like some sort of building that housed multiple residents and Bonnie thoroughly examined it as she shut the door behind her. Kai rounded to her as they both regarded the home. "This...is where they're staying."

"Where who is staying?" To answer Bonnie's question, the front door, stairs leading to it, was swung back with brutal force. An old man with old white hair, eyes creased deeply and face set in a frown emerged. His features were embedded with age but for some reason, she saw something familiar.

"What are you doing here, you disgraceful child," he seethed with so much rage, Bonnie saw the tone mirror her once-old self. The man approached, quickly grabbing hold of Kai's collar and tightening his fists around it.

Crazy thing was, Kai was letting it all happen, eyes solely on the ageing individual clearly threatening him. Something in Kai's face crackled as if he was mentally restraining himself from acting up. "Hello, dad." With that being said, his own father threw a punch right into his face.
