"How scary exactly is Elena's life?" Kai whispered to her as if there was some sort of demon watching them.
"Terrifying," Bonnie answered bluntly.
Kai hummed, nodding to himself. He took the first step over the lawn, examining the perimeter. "What's the worst memory she's had of here?"
"As far as I know, this was where Katherine first pretended to be her, by kissing Damon. Then she killed Elena's biological dad, John Gilbert." They reached the porch and Bonnie knocked slowly. She knew that the portrait of a family home was simply an illusion until things really started. The door swung open into the dark household and Bonnie took a sharp breath. "This is for you, Elena," she whispered to herself. Despite every instinct in her body telling her to run for the hills, Bonnie took a step in.
Every inch of the house was dark, except the one room Bonnie knew was the kitchen. Kai followed behind her, ignoring the door that shut on its own. Bonnie approached the room, overlooking the family having dinner. She quickly recognized Grayson and Miranda laughing at something 4-year-old Jeremy mumbled. John sat at the table and so did Jenna and it looked like they were enjoying a Thanksgiving feast.
"Where's Elena?" Kai asked.
Bonnie started to remember how Elena had complained about how she was so angry at her parents on Thanksgiving, she locked herself in her room. "I think she is upstairs." Bonnie tried to forget the fact that John was caressing Jenna's thigh dangerously close to the nether regions. Upon turning around, her scream was muffled by a hand that dragged her up the stairs. It was so quick that Kai hadn't noticed after the first 3 seconds.
"Bonnie?" He turned towards the dark and called. No answer. "Bonnie," Kai yelled, his eyes searching the whole room for her to no avail. It was too dark. Kai cursed and decided to run up the stairs, wondering if she had left without him.
As he arrived on the second floor, the door to Elena's door slammed shut and he heard the cry for help. "Kai."
He ran to the knob, attempting to wing it open. Only it was sealed shut. "Bonnie. What's happening?" All he heard was the shattering scream of his witch and that was enough to cause Kai to hold a hand out to the door. He knew using magic only brought downtime on the amount he needed to siphon but when it came to her...it was worth it. "Lignum volant."
The door tried to burst open but whatever force was there didn't want more than one person in that room. Kai cursed again, Bonnie's scream echoing hauntingly in his mind. A bead of sweat dripped down his face and it dawned upon him that this was the first time he was scared for someone other than himself. This was when Kai felt helpless and frightened for the girl on the other side of the door and it strained his heart in a stinging way. He laid a hand on the door and pounded with all his might, Kai's voice almost breaking. "Bonnie, are you okay? Talk to me."
Bonnie could hear his demands on the other side of the door but she could barely focus on Kai when she was gagging at what was in front of her. 6-year-old Elena's eyes were still as the vampire sucked the blood out her veins. Compared to the supernatural, she was like an American doll.
"I'm almost done, sweetie," the feminine voice promised with a mouthful of ruby blood. Bonnie's eyes watered with tears as the face of the vampire came into view. It was Isobel. Elena's biological mother. She finally pulled away from Elena's neck, wiping the excess blood from her tainted lips. "There we go, Elena. All finished." Isobel tilted Elena's chin so that she was looking straight into her eyes. "Forget what happened tonight. You locked yourself in your room and you went to sleep."
Bonnie realized that when she became a vampire, the memories must have returned and it terrified her. Bonnie instantly looked around the room, recollecting that she was here for Elena. Bonnie spotted the wooden chair that was tucked in a desk. She struggled at first to snap it but when she pulled out the sharp end of the stake-like weapon, Bonnie did not hesitate to drive into Isobel's heart. The woman stopped mid-sentence of her compulsion and her skin started to ripple with death vines.
The door finally swung open and Kai fell in. Bonnie took a step back, watching Isobel die. Elena didn't even look fazed, she simply went to bed and tucked herself into the night.
"Bonnie," Kai rasped breathlessly, pulling her to him. He quickly examined her for injuries. "What happened?"
Bonnie only let one tear fall and tried to collect all the air that was sucked out of her lungs. "Isobel. She fed on her own child. She left Elena and she only came back for a blood bag."
Kai could care less, he was only concerned about how this would scar Bonnie. He knew that her mother left her at a young age too but this...this was disgusting. "We finished our part. Time to leave." He interlocked their hands together and Bonnie didn't have the energy to protest.
They ran down the stairs, throwing the door open. Kai led them right back to the location they arrived in and the light finally swept them back to the Mystic Cemetery. Their bodies, standing still and eyes closed, jolted awake.
Bonnie took in the scene, the sunrays shining through the dirty glass windows and everyone else still linked to Elena's body. Everyone else was gone and the only one there was Stefan.
"Hey, did you do it?" Stefan asked, his eyes searching for only one answer. They all knew that for Elena to truly come back was only if they all succeeded and it was only one shot.
"Yeah," Bonnie said, wiping the single tear.
"What did you see?"
"Why aren't the others awake?" Kai asked, examining all their bodies looming over Elena's bodies.
He contemplated answering. "You guys were the first to get back. It's been 3 days."
Bonnie's eyes widened. "3 days?"
Stefan nodded. "I know. Ric and Jo went back home and Klaus is back in town so you can imagine where Caroline is."
Bonnie nodded, not sure what to say next. She was hungry and tired at the same time. "I haven't had a proper meal in a while."
"Sure, you'll meet Matt at the Grill."
"And I assume Jeremy is watching over Katherine?"
"Yes. Let's just hope Katherine hasn't sucked him dry by the time Elena wakes up."
