hazards

The receding footsteps of Caroline leaving the house faded out. Bonnie finally turned the doorknob and took a step out. Kai followed after her, heading towards the front door. "I guess this is my cue as well. I mean, leaving is the only reason why you forgave me."

Bonnie stopped in her tracks, right in the middle of the living room. She slowly turned around, facing him. "Actually, do you know how to bake?"

"Is this a trick?" Kai narrowed his eyes.

"Well, I'm actually craving some peanut butter ginger spice cookies and I can't bake for anything. Caroline just left and--"

"Yes," Kai said abruptly, taking his coat off. He tossed it on a couch and rubbed his hands together. "Yes, I will make you the best cookies you'll ever taste. Honestly, it's the only good thing my mother taught me, how to bake." Kai bounced to the kitchen, examining all the ingredients and materials Caroline pulled out.

Bonnie rolled her eyes, following after him. "I can help out but I might somehow burn the house."

Kai picked up a bowl, pulling in the flour and sugar. "Don't worry, I'll put you to use." He reached for a measuring cup, his bare arms quickly snatching the glass cup. "So you want peanut butter ginger spice cookies? I've never heard of that."

Bonnie chuckled lightly. "It's a recipe my Grams used to make when I..." When she felt alone. Although with Kai here, the mood had somehow shifted. It was as if he filled something up she never thought was empty. "When I was feeling down."

"Oh." Kai glanced at her.

"It's not because of you. I just feel like when Sybil died, some part of me just went away," Bonnie admitted, sliding onto the counter and watched Kai make the batter. "Make sure to add a good dose of peanut butter, it carries the whole thing."

Kai did so, taking note that Sybil's mind-altering had taken away the feeling Enzo gave her. He wondered if his selfish wants had damaged Bonnie even more. "Come here, I need you to mix the dry ingredients while I prep the wet ingredients." Kai held the wooden spoon out for her and she slid off, grabbing it. Their hands connect briefly, a little spark igniting in Bonnie's veins. She ignored it and did as Kai instructed.

"You know, we still aren't friends," she muttered, the force of the peanut butter, the sugar and the flour making it hard to mix.

"This is a start to somewhere." Kai cracked the eggs, separating the yolk and the whites fluidly. He tossed the shells away and repeated it a couple of times.

Bonnie remained silent, reaching for the ginger extract. She wasn't paying much attention and her hand gesture must have tipped more than necessary. "Oh, crap. I added too much extract."

"It's okay. Hopefully, you don't kill our taste buds." Kai looked over, resuming his task.

Bonnie couldn't help but laugh, placing the mini bottle down. "After all we've been through, you're concerned about your taste buds?"

"Of course I am, how else am I suppose to enjoy my evening after a long day of ruining the world?" Kai approached, slowly applying the wet ingredients to the dry. Bonnie tried to ignore the tips of his hair ticking her nose but couldn't resist the sneeze. With it, she accidentally jolted the bowl, the mixture pouring over her clothes and face.

Bonnie's eyes widened, placing the half-empty bowl away. "This is why I'm a hazard to the kitchen."

Kai reached for her face, wiping the uneven batter from her face. "You're also a hazard to my heart." Bonnie wasn't sure how to react as Kai pulled away quickly with an embarrassed expression. "My bad, I shouldn't have done or said that."

Bonnie shook her head, waking up from what had just happened. "Just make sure it doesn't happen again. It was cringey." She pulled away from the kitchen, heading up to her room.

Kai muttered quickly, "Duly noted. I'll clean up."

Bonnie took a quick shower, washing away the mess that was made in the kitchen. She entered her bedroom, not even shocked to find Kai laying across her bed with a book in hand. He munched on cookies he must have found in the pantry.

Bonnie's hair was wet and she approached the bed slowly, eying the chocolate chip cookie he was snacking on. Kai held a hand out with a cookie, "Want one?"

Bonnie took a closer look at what he was reading and her eyes bulged. "Are you reading my diary?" She jumped across the bed, snatching it out of his grasp. Kai remained neutral, sucking the chocolate from his fingers. He placed the box on the nightstand beside him.

"It's actually kind of interesting, nothing too cringey." Kai mused, crossing his arms behind his head as he watched Bonnie try to frantically hide the journal. "So you had a crush on Matt Donavon in grade 9?"

"Shut up." She placed it in the drawer, slamming it shut. Bonnie then tucked herself into her bed. "And get out."

Kai turned to face her, grinning. "Come on, BonBon. I'm the best person you could hire to protect you."

"I don't need protection," she muttered, turning around, facing her back to Kai.

But you do, Kai thought. Now that he had a fresh start with Bonnie, now that she didn't remember what he did to Enzo, he wasn't completely a monster in her eyes. But her friends remembered everything and once one of them tried to get her to remember...Kai knew that BonBon needed protection from her friends. "You don't have your magic."

"So now that I don't have magic, I'm completely useless?"

Kai sighed, "Not in that way. I'm just saying that I can help you."

"If I got my magic back somehow while I was under Sybil's control, it means I still have it somewhere."

"That is true. Sybil forced your magic out and now that she's gone, it's back into hiding. The only way for it to return is if you try to exercise it out." Bonnie remained silent and Kai wasn't sure if she had fallen asleep. For some reason, he said, "I can help you with that."

Bonnie then turned around and even he felt himself melt into her smile. "You're not a bad guy, Kai. You're just a kid who was neglected by his parents growing up and that is the only reason why you're like this."

Kai's heart seemed to thunder in his chest and the urge to kiss Bonnie Bennett had never seemed like a death threat until now. But deep down, he knew he couldn't. He knew that the only reason why she was warming up to him was because she didn't remember that she loved Enzo. She didn't remember that he was the one to carve the hole in her chest. So Kai simply smiled back, switching the light off. "Goodnight, BonBon."

"And I was like, 'Don't judge me.' So then I give him a heart attack."
