Kai traced Bonnie's bare back as she slept, smiling to himself. What just happened was everything he wanted and maybe more. He was surprised that the bed still stood all the way through to the morning. He watched her sleep until Bonnie muttered, eyes still closed. "Stop that, you've done enough to my back."
Kai snorted, propping himself on his elbows. "Want me to get you crutches?"
Bonnie shoved his face, later placing a pillow over her head. "Shut up." Kai repositioned himself, tucking his arms behind his head and stared at the ceiling. That was only a couple of seconds before he turned back to Bonnie, prepared to wrap his arms around her. Before he could even touch her, she said muffled under the pillow. "Don't even think about it." Bonnie tossed the pillow away and rose from the bed. "This was a--I don't even know what this was."
Kai scoffed, feigning hurt. "Excuse me? This was the best night of your life."
Bonnie shook her as if to say, I beg to differ. She placed her legs on the floor, trying to walk towards the bathroom. But she failed horribly, her legs wobbling at each step. It came to a point where she had to use the wall for support. "What happened to bringing back my magic? Because if I still had it, I would have set you on fire."
Kai laughed heartily, licking his dry lips. "Right. You sure you want to practice before Elena wakes up from her slumber?"
"It'll take days for the rest to come back if it took us 3. And to say, we were probably the quickest because there were two of us," Bonnie said, closing the door to the bathroom behind her. She got ready, taking a warm shower, brushing her teeth and dressing in black tight jeans and a simple maroon cotton t-shirt. "When and where do we start?" Bonnie asked as she emerged into the room. Her walking stability had gotten better.
"Where were your parents buried?"
"Why do you need to know?" She went straight into defensive mode, the faint agony of her father's murder, thanks to Silas, stirring up old pain.
"It's the last direct line that connects you to your Grams and heritage. Unless you know any other cousins connected to the Bennett Bloodline?" Kai pushed himself to his feet. Bonnie was glad that he had slipped boxers on during the time she was in the washroom. He then plastered on a shirt, pulling his pants on as well.
Bonnie shook her head in response. "They're all dead, I'm the last one." She took the first couple of steps leading down, Kai following after her. "We're going to Lockwood Estate."
"Why are they buried there?" Kai asked with curiosity.
"Because..." Bonnie thought of what words to use. "I didn't want them in the Mystic Falls Cemetery, too many terrible things happened there and I was afraid that the aura would somehow block them from moving onto peace."
Kai remained quiet, registering that the topic hit pretty close to home. They were quickly in the car, driving up to the estate. The white mansion came into view and Bonnie slammed the door to the car. It was dark, most of its family occupants gone. Bonnie heard from Caroline that the only reason why the maids and servants still tended to the house was because the town still needed a Mayor. Bonnie didn't mention this to Kai but she also buried her parents there because her father, Rudy Hopkins, was Mayor of Mystic Falls before he died.
They approached the gate, and before Bonnie could enter the pin, Kai mumbled, "Motus." The gates swung open.
Bonnie rolled her eyes and stepped onto the property. A couple of guards appeared, asking for their reason of being there. But once they realized that Bonnie was the daughter of the late Mayor, they didn't question further. She led Kai to the far back of the estate, finally approaching two tombstones neighbouring rose bushes. Rudy Hopkins and Abbie Wilson Bennett lay next to each other. "This is it."
Kai circled around, taking in the bright healthy leaves of the three large trees that almost sheltered it. "You ready?"
Bonnie nodded, taking a deep breath. "Tell me what I have to do."
"This is meant to trigger your magic into slowly coming back to you. Magic's roots are and will always be with nature. I want you to reach into those roots and call your magic back to you," Kai instructed, standing between the tombstones.
Bonnie did as told, knees on the ground and entwined her fingers into the dirt. She closed her eyes, gripping the ground. It was dark and she tried to reach to whatever trigger would bring her magic back. Her heart started to beat at a rapid pace, the darkness coiling into the broken screams of her mother. The images morphed into Damon snapping her neck, later then turning the witch into a vampire. Her heartbeat wavered until the images grew of her father standing on a podium, delivering a speech. It shattered immediately, Silas appearing and her father dropping to the floor.
Kai shook her awake. "This is not working." He held a shovel, taking a step when Bonnie woke with a gasp. He began to shovel the dirt.
"What are you doing?" Bonnie exclaimed, eyes wide as he dug her father's grave.
"We need to dig deeper, magic's roots are not enough to connect you back to the Bennett Bloodline." Kai didn't falter in his digging, tossing the excess dirt behind him. It didn't take long for him to reach the coffin. He wiped his sweaty forehead, jumping down. "Come here." Kai brushed the dirt off the coffin and Bonnie warily followed.
Her heart strained as she placed a hand on the face of the polished brown coffin. Bonnie closed her eyes, frantically searching for what they were looking for so that she could leave. This whole project was unwinding scars she wished she never knew about. More images of her father's face appeared, utterly clueless to the face of Stefan's doppelgänger.
"We still need to go deep," Kai declared outside of her consciousness and she flew her eyes open as the coffin lid started to raise.
"Kai." It was too late, the deceased skeleton body of her father sat in front of her.
"We're getting closer," Kai pushed.
Bonnie tried once more, placing a shaky hand on her father's heart and foraging through the toxic darkness. No avail. "I don't want to do this anymore." Bonnie pulled back, turning to Kai with her shaking head. The first day was not a success.
"Wait." Kai reached into the coffin, pulling out a cotton teddy bear, the fur tan beige and one black bead eye missing.
Bonnie quickly identified it. "Miss Cuddles." She held a hand out for the bear, quickly hugging it to her chest. She chuckled slightly. "I couldn't make it to the funeral but Caroline...she told me that she paid her respects but I didn't know that she did this." She knew that this was the final attempt. Bonnie closed her eyes, riding with the light waves the child toy came with. Compared to the sorrow of her parents, the bear felt bright and light. All of a sudden, she felt the link, the bond that tied the Bennett heritage all the way back to her magic. There was a pulse, a burst of energy within the bear and Bonnie gasped as she felt strength course back into her veins.
Bonnie opened her eyes slowly, the rush of delirium rising around her. The leaves from the tree all blew off, the wind picking up. Her eyes fell to Kai who had a grin. "It's back."
