The city of New Orleans was more beautiful than people gave it credit for, especially under the twinkling stars. The streets seemed to be even busier at night, people dancing and socializing to the music that seemed to float out of the air. The comforting smell of food entwined with the crisp air and this only brought a smile against Bonnie's face.
Kai was leading her through the crowd, saying, "I saw this amazing bakery shop when we drove to Rousseau's and I knew we had to visit it."
"God, you and your love for food," Bonnie rolled her eyes, letting him tug her. She bumped into a couple of people but apologized with a smile. "How are you not as big as a house?"
Kai brought her close to him, his body warmth sheathing her from the night cold and he chuckled. "When I hit puberty I wondered that too. But come on, they better not be closed."
Bonnie scoffed, a smile breaking her face. "Something tells me that you're going to become hangry and cause an earthquake."
"You've been paying attention, BonBon, I'm proud." He slowed their steps to halt in front of a small street shop. The woman, short, plump and dark, sat on the stool, singing a ballad unto the street. The tune of her voice made Bonnie want to break into a dance, laughing into the sky, laughing into the universe that she was finally happy.
"Good evening!" She greeted with a warm smile. "How can I help you young couple on this fine evening?"
Kai smirked, taking a look at the chalkboard sign in front of the cart. "Three sets of beignets, is that right, am I saying that right?"
"Yes you are," she chuckled as she rose. "New Orleans has a faint French history but the language is not spoken commonly today."
"Okay, so three beignets and two hot chocolates with marshmallows," he said in a singsongy voice.
"Three?" Bonnie tugged at his shirt and glanced around her in case her eyes were deceiving her. "There's only two of us."
Kai laughed lowly at that, clicking his tongue. "What do you mean, only two of us? There's you, me, and my belly. BonBon, please tell me that you can still see because I hear psychics these days are going blind."
Bonnie growled, shoving him aside as the woman baked up the first batch of beignets. "Oh shut up," she rolled her eyes, shaking her head and Kai only laughed in response.
The woman's ears perked at Kai. "Psychic? You guys are witches?" Bonnie didn't know how to respond. Suddenly, Klaus's warning rang in her head. She was in Marcel's residence, he had eyes and ears everywhere. The woman must have read her face because she laughed it off, batting a hand away. "Not to worry, girl, I'm not here to ruin your night. It's just...been a long time since I've seen a set of witches this happy. Although, I haven't seen you around so I assume that you're new?"
Kai nodded and Bonnie furrowed her eyebrows. "The witches haven't been happy? I thought they had the protection of Marcel."
She snorted to that, handing the second batch to Kai. "Protection? Who gave you that silly idea? Marcel controls them with a cursed tyranny. He holds the witches like toys and makes them dance along the stage like stringed up puppets."
"What happened?"
She glanced down the street before leaning in close. "Rumour has it that he obtains an object the witches need for survival. Without this, they will perish so he uses it against them."
Bonnie's head started to turn gears. Marcel's biggest arsenal so far was the witches. If she broke their alliance, he wouldn't be all-powerful and Hayley could live in a city were dancing and getting as big as a house was the script of her life. "What's this object he has that the witches need?"
