broken mice

"Couldn't you get Davina..." Kai began but trailed off. "Oh right. The bitch is dead."

And in time to that, more shuffles of footsteps occurred and Marcel emerged. "And the message she sent me doesn't make any sense." He held out the sheet of paper, reading, Find me once you're out.

"We were hoping you could find a spell to...stop the process of whatever is happening."

"It seems like the after-effects of the dark magic that caused Hayley's pregnancy to speed up. Probably a fail-safe placed by the witches to make sure Hope died in case they failed. And like back then, I can't do anything about it now."

"Well, what are we supposed to do?" Hayley asked with concern as she hoisted Hope unto her hip. "At this rate, she'll be 25 in a month." She'd be dead in three.

"I have a couple of things in mind that might help but I'm not sure," Bonnie said as she approached Hayley and Hope. She brushed her finger against the toddler's cheek and Hope giggled.

"It seems to me that you'll need Davina. How about you help me resurrect—" Marcel began.

"It seems to me that you're already breaking rules just after your sentence has been shortly served. We wouldn't want you to yield back to the trenches of your cell so soon, now do we, Marcellus?" Klaus smiled in a threatening manner.

"Davina is a backstabber. She deserves what came at her and if she finds a way to come back to the living, I'll make sure it doesn't stay that way," Hayley spat.

Marcel didn't look too happy but he remained silent. Before anyone else could speak, three vampires stepped into the daylight. "There is new witch trouble down south."

Klaus's face instantly soured. "Your job is to take care of it, not report back like broken mice."

"We tried, the men stationed there are struggling. These witches, they aren't normal...they wiped out the entire northern patrol, are taking care of the southern and are making their way towards here," The tall buff vampire said.

Klaus growled, muttering about how he had to do everything by himself to get the job done properly and walked out. Marcel seemed to follow, leaving Elijah, Hayley, the child, Bonnie and Kai.

"We'll keep this in mind, but we have to raincheck. Bonnie and I have a date," Kai beamed, already motioning for Bonnie. Except she wasn't looking. Or even listening. Bonnie followed Hayley further into the compound, Hope muttering gibberish. Kai sighed in defeat, crossing his arms as he turned to Elijah. "Why didn't you just call me? I'm just as capable."

Elijah chuckled. "You think I haven't realized that you've been keeping Bonnie away from us? She is part of this family, she deserves to be kept acquainted in our family meetings."

"Yeah, I understand that but she needs time to herself. After everything that happened, she might have recovered physically but I highly doubt she did mentally," Kai countered.

"If that's the case, Bonnie will know what to do. She alone decides what is good for her so if she says she's fine, she's fine." Kai expelled a distressed sigh, shaking his head. Elijah gave him a short nod. "I suggest you stop babysitting her and treating her like a child she is not. She easily matches my strength and we both know that an independent woman like her could ruin the world." He brushed past Kai. "So when she is ready to take a break, she will let us know."

Bonnie sank into the plush single chair, relaxing deeply. She tried to calm her frantic thoughts and the exhaustion that was overriding her bones. Once she settled, she opened her eyes to find Hayley staring at her. Hope was playing with one of the many toys on the ground, slamming it against the table. Bonnie sat up and straightened. "What?"

Hayley shrugged, clearing her throat. "I just missed you. You and Rebekah left at the same time." This reminded Bonnie of a time when the two people closest to her left at the same time as well. It must have affected Hayley deeply.

Bonnie smiled. "I didn't leave, I moved."

"But you're leaving, right?" Hayley seemed to hate the topic.

"What?"

"You said that after the baby was born, after everything was safe and I was settled in with the Mikaelson's, you guys would leave."

Silence. She did say that. "Do you want me to leave?" Maybe those tickets out of town would be perfect for that. But deep down, Bonnie didn't want to leave. She was part of something bigger than her. People who had the same will to fight just as her.

"Of course not. But if you feel like you're finished here...I completely understand," Hayley nodded more times than she needed to.

Bonnie laughed as she rose from the chair, throwing her arms around the woman. "I'm staying." Hayley returned the warm hug.

They eventually broke apart and Hayley asked, "Oh, did we tell you?"

"Tell me what?"

"We could never find out why I returned from the dead, after those witches killed me." Her eyes darkened and Bonnie wasn't sure if it was from sadness or anger. Bonnie had concluded that it was Aithne who granted her that gift, after she— "Turns out that it was all thanks to this bundle of joy," Hayley beamed as she brushed a hand through the child's hair. "Hope is a Tribrid, a witch, a wolf and a vampire. Her wolf and vampire side will need to be activated though. But because of this, she has Klaus's ability to turn people into hybrids with her blood. And when I was giving birth, her blood was still in my system. When I died, I came back as—"

"A hybrid," Bonnie finished. There went her theory. "That makes much more sense than what I was thinking. Are you okay though? I know that the transition must have been hard."

"I have to be okay. For Hope. I'm...adjusting. Elijah has been helping me with the urges and teaching me techniques to fight so that nothing like that ever happens again," Hayley nodded to herself. "Things are good now. Except for the fact that she's growing at an unnatural pace."

"I'll try my best to fix it. If not, I might have to return to Mystic Falls to find my grandmother's grimoire." Bonnie placed a hand on Hayley's arm. "We'll figure it out."

Hayley nodded at the same time her cellphone buzzed. She read the message and quickly said, "I am so sorry, it's Jackson."

"Jackson?"

"We've been..talking."

"Ah, I see," Bonnie grinned. "What does Elijah think?"

"Why would Elijah have a say in what happens in my love life?"

Bonnie shrugged carelessly at that. "Um, I don't know. Just a thought." She knew that Hayley had feelings for the Original and didn't know how to shoulder past them.

"Anyways, I'm needed at the Bayou. You mind looking after Hope for a couple of hours?" Hayley was already heading for the door, blowing kisses to her child.

"Of course, see you later," Bonnie waved and turned to Hope. The baby seemed lost in her own world of dolls and toys. She crouched in front of the small creature. "Hey, Hope. I'm Auntie Bonnie and I hear that you're sick. I'm going to help you okay?" Hope gurgled in response as Bonnie sat crisscrossed in front of her. "But for now, you want to hear a story? Once upon a time, there was a majestic king, who lived with his noble brother in a colorful kingdom where music and art were celebrated. The king did not foresee having a child, but he lived in an enchanted land where all things were possible. In time, he was blessed with a beautiful baby daughter for whom he wished only peace and happiness. Still, the king had demons who pursued him. There was a ruthless beast who wanted to take the kingdom for his own. Armed with a pack of untamed creatures, he drove the other magical beings from the land. And there was a wicked sorceress with enchanted power that weakened the king only to plunge a knife of betrayal into his back to ensue the very beginning of raw chaos. Seeing the shadow his enemies cast upon his home, the king was driven by a strength of love that in the end conquered and vanquished the demons, banishing them to the darkest and coldest places of the world. The king rejoiced in the safety of his kingdom, built for none other but his princess. For this princess was guarded and protected like the true gem she was."
