Bonnie was tucked in bed, trying to survive the upcoming cold that took over her body. It was pretty usual, Nora said, because all magic spells have their symptoms on the different individuals. The Heretic herself walked in with a remedy. "Good morning, Bonnie."
She sat up, clearing her throat. "It's morning already? I can't keep track."
"It's alright, you're still recovering. Here, take this medicine Mary Lou assembled to try and suppress the sickness. With our luck, we never know." Nora handed her the cup.
Bonnie took it and downed it, grimacing at the pungent taste. She placed it aside and turned back to her friend. "After a couple of days, I'll be good as new." The way Nora averted her eyes gave Bonnie something to worry about. "What's wrong?"
"Before we...purified you, there was an insinuation that it left some permanent remnants on your soul," Nora said slowly, not trying to put any unnecessary stress on the witch. "We're trying to monitor you and we're not sure if this human illness will adapt to the same sickness as before. The black magic could have undone its effectiveness on the supernatural illness."
Bonnie slowly shook her head. "No. I would feel it, I doubt it's that. I feel perfectly fine." Other than the fact that she hadn't been able to sleep in the past three days. She was fine.
"Okay. Good," Nora sighed deeply. Bonnie could tell she was itching to say more. "But that's not all."
"What happened?"
"It's not all that serious, I just believe that you have the right to know." She cleared her throat and adjusted herself on her feet. "But when we were foraging for solutions to your issue, there was a little tango on what would happen."
"What exactly are you trying to say?"
"I understand that you trust me enough to tell me how you truly felt about Kai. And I believe that it is my duty to inform you that he was willing to trade his life for yours. It is completely up to you to decide whether it was ethical on his part but I felt as though you should be told."
Bonnie took a deep breath and looked out the window. She tugged the warm blanket around her body, trying to conceal her emotions. "It's fine." It wasn't. This only gave her the perfect view of the bullet she had dodged, all the past memories of her deceased loved ones now fresh on her mind. It angered her. Kai knew. He knew that she had finally admitted that she loved him, after all the difficulty he had inflicted on her heart. After all he took, now that she was prepared to give back, he wanted to leave? Bonnie knew that she wouldn't be able to live with the fact that he died because of her, taking her last shreds of the ability to love away with him. Because Kai was always taking.
Nora nodded, making her way for the door. "People have been giving you space to recover but once you're out of it, prepare yourself for a party." She winked on her way out, the door slamming shut.
Bonnie wasn't left alone with her thoughts much longer when it opened again, Kai stepping in. "How are you feeling? Did Nora give you the medicine?"
"Were you going to kill yourself for me?" She jumped straight to the point, cocking her head to the side.
Kai shrugged with a goofy smile as he approached the bedside. "I thought it would be heroic, you know? The first selfless thing I've done."
Bonnie scoffed, rolling her eyes. Out of all her responses, Kai did not expect this. "There was nothing selfless about it. Once again, you didn't think about how I would feel after I woke up with you gone, you only thought about how you would feel with me gone. I tell you how much I care about you and you go and decide to die?"
"So I was meant to just let you die when my life was an option as a trade?"
"You were meant to talk to me about it. You were meant to find other options, you were meant to protect me. Protect my heart because you know that I..." The organ in question started to ache and Bonnie took a deep breath.
Kai knew they were past the point where he was trying to get her to say the sentence out loud. "I didn't think of that. I was thinking about you."
"That's not enough if this going to work." She found herself saying, regretting the words. She wasn't sure where she was going with it.
Kai slid into bed with her, a frown on his face. "Wait, what? We have to establish rules for this type of thing, you can't just call quits."
Her train of thought was lost when his arm wrapped around her torso, pulling her close. Enzo's voice started to echo in her head. There is always a journey for survival and love. Bonnie relaxed against his touch, finally finding the comfort she was missing for the past two days. "We just need to communicate better."
His breath tickled her ear as he whispered, "I personally think we should just lay here and, I don't know, perform some sort of intercourse?"
She lets herself smile, hugging his hand to her heart. Bonnie's eyes shuttered and she mumbled. "Shut up." Sleep finally came and her world finally went black.
*
Kai had fallen asleep right after her but it wasn't even past 1 hour when Bonnie started to writhe in his arms. He woke with a jerk, confused and concerned at once. She was whimpering under her breath, mumbling strings of unknown words. Kai shook her shoulder, attempting to wake her up. "Bonnie?" She didn't. Kai stood up, turning her unto her back. "BonBon."
At that, her eyes flung open but Kai knew she wasn't awake. Her pupils were all white and her mouth was agape a little bit. Kai cursed, scanning her body for any signs of whatever was happening. None. She was shaking now and he cursed when he realized it must have been the black magic.
Before he could react, Bonnie stood up from the bed and she was speaking to him but not at the same time. "Get me papers and a pencil." He didn't move, mind completely blank as to what was happening. "Get me papers and a pencil," she ordered with more persistence.
Kai found himself obeying, pulling drawers open until he finally found them. He handed them to her with a confused expression. "What are--"
She dropped to the floor, scattering the blank papers on the ground. Bonnie started to frantically scribble everywhere and Kai neared the door, calling for Nora.
Bonnie scratched the pencil everywhere, drawing lines and curves. Nora burst in, glancing around the room. "What's happened?"
"It looked like she was in a nightmare at first but I can't figure out what she's doing now," Kai explained, Mary Lou entering as well.
Nora crouched in front of Bonnie, grabbing her chin to angle her head. From Kai's position, he could see that her eyes were blinking from normal to complete white. "I have to finish," she rasped, jerking her head back to the drawings.
"I don't understand," Mary Lou said at the door.
Nora examined the drawings thoroughly and Kai approached as well. "It appears she's drawing some sort of image."
"Bonnie's not an artist..." he trailed off. Kai didn't actually know.
"This must be the black magic," Mary Lou said.
"I'm almost finished," Bonnie was saying, the image of a woman emerging on the paper. "Almost." Hayley Marshall's face finally came out and Bonnie sagged in relief, breathing heavily. "Hayley is pregnant."
