It was a quick drive to the small cabin in the woods, Matt and Jeremy staying back in town to monitor any supernatural activity.
Caroline was driving and Kai was whistling in the back. Bonnie held the phone to her ear. "How's Jo?"
"She's doing fine. It seems that Lizzie only made her really tired for the day. I insisted that we visit a magic consult to figure out why she siphoned off a magicless witch but Jo is too focused on the wedding," Ric explained, the voices of small little children running around in the background.
"I wish I could help in some way," Bonnie sighed, glancing at her thighs. "But I think she is right, maybe you should focus on the day you'll have a rest from it all. I doubt Caroline will show up if the wedding cake doesn't match the theme."
Ric chuckled on the other line and Caroline leaned over. "The cake does match the theme, right? Does Jo need me? I can totally drop babysitting Damon to wedding plan the most wonderful wedding you'll ever attend."
Bonnie shook her head. "And there she goes."
"Have you guys reached Damon yet?"
"Actually, we're just reaching the house. I'll call you later," Bonnie said, hanging up shortly.
Kai was still whistling to an old familiar tune, filling the now silence in the car. Caroline was pissed off. "Are you seriously whistling London Bridge is Falling Down?"
Kai stopped, cocking his head to the side. "My mom used to sing it for me when it was bedtime instead of reading stories. The song inspired me as a child, I always imagined actually ruining the bridge. Until one night, she forgot to sing it to me and I couldn't sleep. Later that night, I found out that she fell asleep in the bathtub. So immature. So...well. I dropped a toaster into the tub."
Bonnie was unsettled, the disgust seeping into her face. "I wonder what else inspired you as a child. We can only blame that."
Kai laughed as Caroline parked in front of the house. They all jumped out, walking up to the front door. She opened the door and was the first to step in, followed by the other two. "Valerie?"
Total and utter silence answered her. Bonnie began to explore the house, taking in the white curtains and the wooden floors. This was what you'd see in a typical family home. Caroline took the stairs, calling after the Heretic.
"You sure you're ready to see Damon?" Kai asked, swiping his fingers across the dusty counter.
"What makes you think I'm not?" She slowly circled the TV and the coffee table. Two mugs of coffee were set.
"I don't know, he was your best friend and he bailed on you when you needed him most."
"You know, I'm actually shocked you understand any human feeling whatsoever," Bonnie scoffed, later ignoring him.
"Valerie!" Caroline yelled from upstairs.
Bonnie and Kai both looked at each other before she bolted up the stairs. "Caroline? What's happening?" She reached the top, Kai slowly catching up in his jogging form.
Valerie lay on the floor, her hair pooling around her. Caroline was trying to shake her awake and she began to stir awake. "Damon."
"Where is he?" Caroline demanded, her eyes large with worry.
"He--I turned around for a second and he used the vase to smash my head," she explained. The broken vase of flowers was not too far. Valerie quickly pulled herself up. "We need to get to that vault."
"Oh my god." Caroline swallowed, the fear in her voice evident.
"Caroline, we need to go," Bonnie said urgently, bolting back down. Kai sighed, waiting for the ladies to walk down first before he did so.

They arrived at the building, Caroline flitting to the door. She was in within seconds, Bonnie running in after. Kai decided to lean against the car, looking around the dark road. Valerie stayed back as well, watching Bonnie swing past the door.
"You must be Valerie." Kai crossed his arms, taking in the dirty blonde-haired woman.
"Am I supposed to know who you are?" She slowly turned to him.
"What do you mean, I'm Kai Parker. Everybody knows who I am." He laughed like it was a joke.
"Does not ring any bells. I'd remember a face like yours," Valerie sighed, pacing in front of the car.
Kai remained silent, examining her movement. It didn't last long. "So what's your role?"
"Excuse me?"
"Bonnie's the one who sacrifices and dies all the time, Caroline is the typical blonde high school bitch that somehow matures, Tyler's the anger issues and possessive boyfriend, Matt is the invincible human, Jeremy is Elena's brother, Damon's the reckless vampire and Stefan is the ripper. What are you?"
"I'm the badass Heretic. I'm a vampire and a witch."
Kai nodded slowly. "A loophole. We love that."

Meanwhile, Bonnie and Caroline made their way to the basement. Just in time to see Damon in front of the door, fingers hovering on the keypad. The vault didn't need a Bennett witch to open, it needed a human. Eventually, once Sybil senses the human upon her escape, she whispers the code. That way, when it opens, the human will be her first feast.
"Damon," Caroline hissed. "Step away from the door."
The tall dark-haired man, standing still with a leather jacket swayed to the side, slowly turning around. The bottle of whiskey hung loosely from his fingers. His skin wasn't as vibrant and bright as Bonnie remembered. It was probably from his loss of the only girl who could pull Damon from his chaotic mind.
"Just because you're still a bloodsucker, don't think you can boss me around. And don't even think to compel me," Damon mused, raising the bottle high. "I've learned to get used to the taste of vervain."
Caroline remained silent, Bonnie slowly stepping into view. She was still catching her breath, her panting drawing Damon's attention to her. It was silent as the two examined each other.
She looks good with longer hair, Damon thought, taking in her bleak eyes. Bonnie was naturally beautiful, even when she didn't have the light in her eyes anymore. Damon blinked, willing her image to be gone. He wasn't ready for his best friend, Elena's best friend, to come and remind him of what he did so long ago. Leave her. Abandoned Bonnie when they were both over the brink The one who put Elena's life before hers over and over again. The one who protected Elena when he became the enemy. Damon brought the alcohol to his slips, grimacing. "Well if it isn't the infamous Bonnie Bennett, in to save the day from Damon Salvatore. I've heard this story a couple of times."
Bonnie stepped in front of Caroline, staring back at him. "Damon."
