As she sank into the water, the liquid merged with the darkness. Bonnie was found at the opening of a familiar location. She stood in front of the tomb, the clearing lit with torches of fire. Bonnie glanced around, wondering exactly where she was.
She was shocked to see her Grams emerge, a deep frown on her face. "I have tried my best to warn you, child."
Bonnie sighed, eyes averting to the floor. "I tried, Grams. But love is not something you can control, I learned it the wrong way. I mean look where I am now."
"The Bonnie I knew--" She raised a crinkled finger at her, disappointment drenched in her face.
"The Bonnie you knew is dead. She died the moment you told me I was a witch, the moment you waited 17 years to tell me that my future awaited pain and war and miserable love. You were right, Grams. I'm not going to let anyone walk over our name but I'm also not going to let you control my life when you're dead." Bonnie's voice rose. The harsh words lashed out uncontrollably and Bonnie wished she hadn't said it.
Her grandmother took a couple of steps back, blinking back. "You are not my granddaughter. Here you are, standing at the portal of impure magic, eager to return to a world of blood. This has gone too far, you've broken too many rules. And I'm afraid I shall pay the cost alongside you." The fire blew out.
Bonnie squinted her eyes in confusion. "What are you talking about?"
The ground under the elderly woman turned into black goo and she slowly started to sink. "May your journey of peace and virtue be bright, my dear Bonnie."
"Grams?" Bonnie said breathlessly as she approached her grandmother. The woman began to scream, eyes bleeding red tears. Markings started to rip at her flesh, her body, her soul and Bonnie felt like she was feeling it all as her grandmother drowned in the black pool. "Grams?" She patted the floor, demanding for the witch to return. "Grams, please come back."
Nothing responded, nothing heard her. Bonnie swallowed, stumbling back to her feet. The realization hit her and she tried to contain her tears, wiping the quick ones away. What she didn't expect was the slow footsteps on the pavement, making its way to her. Bonnie's forehead creased as her mirror, the exact image of her, approached. Bonnie 2.0 looked different but identical at the same time.
Somehow, she knew that she was to blame for what just happened. "What did you do to my Grams?"
"She's been around for too long. Waiting for you to screw up and run to her arms for help. Her time was due," Bonnie 2.0 answered, hands in the pockets of her long coat.
"Bring her back," Bonnie demanded, straightening herself.
Bonnie 2.0 brushed her hair aside. "I'm afraid that I just can't do that." She took a taunting step close and Bonnie retreated.
"I know what you are." Her nose flared as she kept a safe distance. "You're trying to break me. But you'll have to do more than that, I've already grieved Grams death and I still believed we'll meet each other again."
"Oh, I'm sure. You Bennett's have a knack to oppose the laws of nature. But the real question is...at what cost?" Her voice lowered to a scary whisper. "So I'm going to give you a choice." She neared again, a small smile on her lips. "You can either await even more pain or spare yourself. Join me, Bonnie Bennett."
"Bring it on," Bonnie challenged, taking deep breaths as she braced herself for anything. Before she knew it, chanting from behind her sang through the yelling wind, voices overlapping over each other. She turned to see a variety of men and women standing behind her, arms entwined with each other. Their wardrobe told her that they were each from different periods of time and by the looks on their faces, she knew they were her kin. They were helping her.
The group of witches chanted against the aggressive air, voice thundering loud. "Expellit daemonium."
Bonnie joined in, focusing all the power on the single shred of black magic. "Expellit daemonium." Bonnie 2.0 flicked her hand with one swish and all of them stopped abruptly, a majority of the men and women wincing at the headache. Bonnie felt it all, her breathing hitching as she ordered, "Stop it."
"You can stop it. Just turn over to my side." Bonnie shook her head slowly, the pain receding away. She recovered, prepared for the next challenge. "I really did hope it didn't have to come down to this, Bonnie."
She waited, prepared once more to fight. Until Enzo appeared, staring at her with a look of concern. "Love, you need to get out of here."
"Enzo--" She drove forwards only to be thrown back by the hands of black magic.
"He's been lingering around too," Bonnie 2.0 said with a sinister grin. She approached Enzo, hands encasing his head. "I wonder what happens to a vampire who won't leave the plane of dead spirits."
"Please, no," Bonnie pleaded from the ground.
"You know what you have to do."
"Bonnie, don't--" Enzo groaned, yelling as the wave of agony the black magic engulfed him.
All too soon, all of a sudden, Bonnie was put in the same position as the night Enzo died. The feeling wasn't as stinging as back then but it didn't stop the tight grip on her heart. She would always love Enzo, she knew that much. But this time, she could stop it, she could save him. Even if it meant not seeing him in person, in the flesh, she could protect whatever cracks of darkness he fled to be able to watch over her. "Okay," Bonnie answered, swallowing deep as she rose. "I'll do it."
Bonnie 2.0 let go of Enzo. He started to chip away with a face of concern as he left. "I knew you'd come around." She pulled out a knife, handing it to Bonnie when they met in the center of the clearing. Bonnie took it, slicing her arm. Red blood trickled out, soaking the dead yellow grass below them. Bonnie 2.0 took the weapon back, cutting her own palm as well. Black blood seeped out, droplets landing on the floor. "Sanguine iunctus sanguinis mei, sunt iungo."
Bonnie sent silent prayers to the stars above and linked their hands together. She gasped, feeling the tainted power douse her blood. She was able to endure it and before she knew it, the lights to the sky flickered and Bonnie knew she was back.
