Christian~
I laid my head down on Brooklyn's growing stomach as she lays on the couch watching some TV. My mom is in the kitchen making dinner for us because she insists on doing it. Brooklyn wraps her arm around me and I move closer to her. She reaches for my hand and puts it on her belly. The smallest, tiniest jab happens right under my hand and I wait for it to possibly happen again.
"Dinner will be in the fridge when you guy's get back," my mom says from behind us.
"Thank you," we both say and I grab my phone to check the time. I show Brooklyn the time and she sighs, "We gotta get going."
I stand up and grab Brooklyn's hand so I can pull her up. "Mom, we're heading out."
"Okay, honey. Good luck."
I grab my keys off the hook, "Thank you."
"Do you have everything?" I ask as we step out of the house and into the garage.
"Yeah," she says quietly as we get in my car. I can see it in her face that she's tired and I feel like I can't do anything. If I could give her all of my energy, I would.
I put my arm over the console so she can lean on it and my hand slips around her leg. "Are you excited?"
She looks up and over at me, "Yeah. Maggie said that she and Will would be at the game tonight. But they are leaving the exploding baseball in the car, so we'll just have to let them in where we go in."
"What about your parents and Caleb?"
"Caleb isn't going to the game, but he said he'll make it for the reveal. My parents are sitting with your mom, I'm pretty sure. Then Collin and Cam are also sitting with our parents."
"I think my brothers are coming to get mom before the game and then they will all meet us down in the clubhouse."
I dig my cleat into the batter's box and adjust my gloves before getting set. It's like this guy has been trying to strike me out all night. It hasn't happened, close, but hasn't happened. Two pitches blow right past me. I get set again and wait for him to throw the ball. I turn my body as fast as possible when I see the ball nowhere near the catcher's glove or zone. Shit, that hurt. Right on my lower back. Fuck, this hurts.
I lean down and try to ride this out before handing my gloves, bat, elbow, and ankle guards off. I slowly make my way to 1st base and glance into the dugout. I see Brooklyn and Couns standing on the stairs talking and I can see the nervousness on her face. Once I reach the base I give them small thumbs up and wait for our next batter.
God, this spot sucks. I see the first base umpire lower his hands and the game resumes. Now that I'm on might as well try to steal second base. I move off the base and try to take a lead before sliding back into first. Dude, let up on me. I dust my pants off and stand up straight. I look back into the dugout and see them cheering me on just as much as the crowd here tonight.
I get my chance and take off toward second and slide into the base. I look up and see the umpire waving his arms over one another. I stand up and look around at the infield arguing with the umpires and calling for a challenge. I start to question but have to hold myself back. I was clearly safe. I look over into the dugout and shake my head and quietly laugh. I watch as they discuss this up by home plate. The home plate umpire waves his hands over one another and the game starts up again. I could have told you I was safe.
I get back on base and play it safe until the end of the inning. I place some pressure on where I got hit and sigh. Damn, he got me good. I hear the crack of the bat and watch it fly over my head. I jog the rest of the way toward home plate and wait for Keston to get back home. We make our way through the dugout earning some cheers.
