(TW - talks about death)
Christian and I made it back to Malibu to spend the offseason there instead of doing what I would consider long-distance. We are spending Thanksgiving in California then flying back to Milwaukee for Christmas and New Year's with my family. In the short amount of time we have been together, his family took me in as one of their own and it felt amazing.
I woke up earlier than Christian and decided I would enjoy the view of the Pacific Ocean. I quickly put on some sweatpants and grab my glasses and head down to make some coffee before enjoying the beautiful Pacific Coast.
It's so nice to be outside and not have to layer up a ton. I can enjoy being out in sweatpants and a t-shirt and not be freezing. I listen to the waves crash against the shoreline and almost put me to sleep as I lay on the outdoor couch.
I notice the door open and see a shirtless Christian come and sit by me, "Is this your favorite part?" he asks and I sit up.
I slightly laugh, "Yeah. I don't know if can get better than this. To wake up to this view every single morning is just incredible."
"I mean it's pretty great, but, I get to wake up to you every day," he says and puts his hand on my thigh. I look down at his hand and smile and place my hand on his. "What are we doing for breakfast?" he asks and pulls me up off the couch. "Hmmm, french toast?" I ask and as we walk back into his house. Christian grabs the bread and eggs and puts them on the island.
Christian wraps his arms around me as I stand in front of the stove flipping the french toast. "Thank you for cooking," he says into my hair. I put the food over on the island, "It's something I enjoy so it doesn't bother me," I tell him as he hands me a plate and fork.
We enjoy our breakfast and head upstairs to get ready. Christian goes into the bathroom to shower and I check my phone. I see four missed calls from my mom, multiple texts, and a voicemail.
Hi honey, I hope you're enjoying your offseason in California, definitely better than what's going on right now. Oh no, I leave for three weeks and something has already happened. So, some stuff has come up and there's no way to put it lightly. So, um, your grandma Anne, she uh passed away last night. Oh my god. No, this cannot be happening. My mom's voice breaks as she continues to tell me what happened. I'm assuming you're going to come home soon since her funeral will be in about a week. Please call me when you get this.
I pull my phone from my face and immediately call my mom. Jesus christ it's like I can't ever catch a break. "Mom?" I ask as my voice breaks. Sweetie, I know, it's okay.
God, I really don't want to ask this question but I need to know, "What happened?"
Brooklyn, we think it was natural, just old age. I sit on our bed with my mom on speakerphone and watch Christian come out of the bathroom. He looks up and smiles but then catches onto how I'm feeling right now. His eyes got big and comes over to me and sits down on the bed. I sniffle and lean into Christian, "When is it going to be?" I ask hoping she can give me a date so I can head back to Milwaukee. It looks like it'll either be Thursday or Friday. You know me, I don't like doing funerals on the weekend.
"Okay. Um, I will make it back out there in time. How's Caleb taking it? I know she was his favorite," I say and lightly chuckle. Well, it's 11:30 and he still hasn't came out of his room today. So I think pretty hard, she tells me as I wipe my tears.
"I'll talk to him," I say and shake my head in disbelief that this is actually happening.
Thank you, I'll tell him to call you soon. Brooklyn, you call me if you need anything. I love you, honey. We'll get through this. I'll see you soon. I nod as if she could see me, "I love you too, mom," I say and I hang up and stare off into the distance.
