Tommy POV

I had been thinking about it for a while now, adopting a child. To anyone who knew me online, they would think I was out of my mind. To be honest I didn't really care what they think. What scares me though is my family.

The first time I brought it up didn't end as well as I had hoped.

"I want to adopt a child."

Everyone stopped, shocked by the statement.

The first one to move was Phil. "No."

I glanced at him, hurt by the reaction. Did he really not think I was capable? "I wasn't asking."

"Tommy, you're not ready." he shook his head.

"Well I think I am." I said, pushing aside my plate that was still filled with food. Suddenly, I wasn't that hungry anymore.

"Tommy orphans are bad news." Techno said, taking another bite of his potato.

"We were orphans." I pointed out. "And we turned out alright."

"That's different." Wilbur explained.

"How is that different?" I didn't understand. I was old enough for this responsibility, I was sure of it.

"Well we're good kids. Not every kid is like that Tommy."

"I disagree." I responded. "You can't base an entire age group on the situation they're in."

"Tommy, I said no." Phil ended the argument. "Now finish your meal."

I shook my head, "I'm not hungry." I stood up from the table, not even putting my plate away. Phil would get mad at me, but at this moment, I really didn't care.

Without a word, I grabbed my coat and left the house. I needed to clear my head.

I wasn't sure how long I had been walking for. By the time I finally checked my phone, an hour had passed. I rolled my eyes, home was the last place I wanted to be.

"H-help."

My head snapped towards the small sound. Did I hear that right? I looked around for a moment, before stopping once more.

"Help." the voice cried out again.

"Where are you?" I called, hoping it could give me a little more direction. I turned on my flashlight from my phone, continuing to search.

A little girl was curled up on the ground, shivering. She had long blonde hair, tangled and messy, and bright blue eyes. In a sense, she looked a lot like me.

"Hey there kiddo, what are you doing out here so late?" I spoke softly, not wanting to scare her off.

"I-I don't have anywhere to go." she whimpered, curling up further.

I felt my heart break. There was no way I was leaving her here, I didn't care what Phil said. I took my jacket off, offering it her. "This will warm you up."

To my relief, she took it, quickly putting it on. It was rather large on her, but it definitely did the trick.

I held out my hand, "I'm Tommy, what's your name?"

"J-Joy." she said, snuggling into my coat.

I smiled, "Why don't you come with me? I'll take you some place safe."

"Safe?" Joy echoed, her eyes shining at the idea.

"Safe." I nodded. "You're always safe with me."

With a little hesitation, she finally took my hand, allowing me to bring her to her feet. The two of us walked back towards my house. I watched her yawn more and more, she looked exhausted. Without really thinking about it, I scooped her up, bringing her close to my chest.

Once we reached the house, I snuck into my window. I didn't really want to see my family. I just wanted to make sure Joy was okay.

I placed her in the bed, wrapping blankets around her small frame. After changing into my pajamas, I slid into bed beside her. She moved closer to me, snuggling into me.

I smiled, already growing fond of her.

I felt like I had finally found my Joy. The thing I had hoped would come with a child.
