Tommy POV

Tommy headed through the crowded streets, wrapping his old coat tighter around himself. He knew he needed a new one, but he just didn't have the money for it. He barely made enough money as it was. Taking a deep breath, he squeezed through the people, nearly suffocating. He had never enjoyed the streets, even after spending a good portion of his life on them.

Spotting the bookshop ahead, he picked up his pace, longing to be safe in its walls. He shuffled past the old sign, not even caring to read it. He knew what it said. "Laura's Little Bookshop." He had been meaning to change the name since the old woman had passed away. But he just couldn't force himself to do it.

Laura had taken him off the streets after his parents abandoned him. Giving him a home, a job, and the thing he had wanted most. A mother. She had treated him like son she had never had. She had always wanted kids, but had never been able to have them. Finding Tommy, she immediately took to looking after him. Even if he was a bit rude to her at first, eventually he grew to love her.

When she passed away suddenly one night, he was forced to look after the shop without her. They had always struggled a little, but they had regulars that were good friends with Laura. The problem was, they didn't like Tommy. Most people didn't like him to begin with. He was just too loud and clumsy. And none of them could ever get over the fact that Laura had taken him off the streets.

So when she passed, they stopped coming, leaving the teen to fend for himself and look after the shop. Which unfortunately turned out to be a lot harder than it sounded.

He had taken to idea after idea, wanting to get the business running better again. He even created a small café, using one of the extra rooms that had once been stored for storage. Many of those rooms were empty now.

But nothing worked. No one wanted to come to the shop if Laura wasn't there.

So Tommy was grateful for every customer that did come by. He just wished it would get easier, but it never did.

Entering the small shop, he sighed. Walking into the room it just felt so empty. Probably because it was. Holding back a few tears, he took a deep breath before getting to work. Dusting off the shelves, starting the coffee. It didn't take long. The long part was flipping the sign to open.

He hated the disappointment. The feeling when he realized no one was coming.

Closing his eyes, he flipped the sign, showing the new word "open" to the world. He then moved to the back, intent on escaping his worries with a bit of reading like he usually did.

But something made him stop. The sound of a bell.

Tommy watched with wide eyes as someone stepped in.
