Tommy POV

Life had never been easy. No matter how hard he tried to make it so. Standing in front of the three, he still felt vulnerable. To speak of his past was to acknowledge that it had happened. And even after all these years, he still had a difficult time accepting it.

Nevertheless, he took a deep breath and began to speak. "I never really had a family, even at a young age. My parents got divorced when I was eight. Not that I was surprised when it happened. I may have been young but I wasn't clueless. I knew they were both cheating on each other every other week just from the way they talked ."

Closing his eyes, he paused, attempting to distract himself from getting trapped in the memories. "My mother took me with her and we attempted to forget all about my father. And for a few years... we did." He smiled at an old memory. Back when his mother truly loved him.

His face fell as he remembered. "But it wasn't long before she grew lonely. And suddenly, I wasn't enough. She needed someone else to love her. Most nights I was left on my own. I learned how to take care of myself a lot quicker than I should have."

"How old were you?" Techno asked softly, almost too afraid to ask.

Tommy took a deep breath. "Nine."

"Nine?!" Phil repeated, his eyes wide. "She left you on your own when you were nine?!"

"No." Tommy shook his head, making the three exchange worried looks. "She left me on my own when I was ten. At least when I was nine I had a home." He sighed, running a hand through his hair. Tears found their way down his cheeks, but he paid no mind. "She would come home all the time with new people. But they always had the same smell. I didn't realize what it was until I was on the streets."

The three of them were speechless. How could such a young kid go through so much?

"The day of my tenth birthday was the day she threw me out. She told me that I was a mistake... that no one would ever love me. I-I couldn't help but believe her. Because I thought mothers couldn't lie." he hugged his knees closer to his chest.

"Oh Tommy..." Wilbur began, but he didn't know what to say. There was nothing he could ever say that would make it go away. He couldn't change the past. No matter how unfair it might be.

"I lived on the streets for years. I survived on nearly nothing, only stealing what I had to in order to survive. I hated everything. Any part of good in the world didn't exist to me. And I thought... I thought I was destined to live the rest of my life like that. But one day... one day changed everything." A small smile appeared on his face. "I was a gifted thief, one of the best on the street. Most of the time I made my money from stealing things that other people didn't want to steal. The kids on the street were afraid to get caught. But I... I wasn't. I wasn't afraid of anything."

Techno moved closer to him, still keeping a small distance to make sure he was comfortable. Wilbur sat beside Techno, leaving Phil to be the only one standing.

"I remember stealing from hundreds of people. Wallets, watches, coins, practically anything that could be worth something. I had always known I was being watched, but I didn't realize why. There was an older woman who seemed to be everywhere. Even when I did my best to avoid my normal spots, she was always there. She never tried to approach me, until that one day. I remember running, not even attempting to talk to her. The thing that always striked me as odd was that she never chased after me. She made it an option of whether or not I wanted to talk to her. After nearly a month of running away, the curiosity got the better of me."

"'What do you want from me?' I had asked.

"Why do you steal if you don't want to?" she had questioned, her eyes never leaving my face. I remember feeling so transparent. I had never felt that way before. Like someone could see right through me.

"Who says I don't want to?" I had retorted.

"A thief never stops. Yet you always do. You're always waiting for someone. Who are you waiting for?"

I remember freezing on the spot. How could she know that I was waiting for someone? "I don't know what you're talking about." I had snapped, immediately growing defensive.

"You always wait by fountain as if someone promised to meet you there someday. Yet no one ever arrives."

As much as I hated it, she was right. I had been waiting for someone..."

"Who?" Phil spoke barely above a whisper, listening to every word the boy spoke.

Tommy met his eyes. "My father. He made me a promise the day he left. He said that in the first week of every month we would meet at the fountain. He promised that he would arrive there at the same time every month. So I waited. Every month I chose a different day with the same time. But it never made a difference. Because I quickly realized that fathers lie too." He wiped his tears on his sleeve. He bit his lip, almost unable to continue.

"Laura took you in?" Wilbur guessed.

Tommy nodded, "She treated me like a son. She gave me a home and she gave me the thing I desired most. Love. She gave me a second chance to have a better life."

"I'm so sorry you had to go through all of that." Phil apologized, kneeling before the crying boy. "You didn't deserve any of it."

"I have you guys now, right?" Tommy asked, looking up at them with glassy eyes.

A sound cut him off, making them all turn towards the door. A new figure entered.

One that was not welcome.
