Techno POV
Techno rested his head on his desk, groaning in defeat. If he had to stare at this paper for another five minutes, he swore his eyes would explode. Pushing his chair back, he stood up. He didn't want to do this anymore. Heck, he never even wanted to do it in the first place.
Glancing towards his backpack, an idea popped into his head. He needed a break. He needed a way to escape for a few hours. Swinging his bag over his shoulder, he left the room. He headed towards the front door, hoping his parents weren't around.
"Where are you going Techno?" his mother's voice stopped him.
Pausing abruptly, he sighed and turned to face her. "My study group is meeting tonight." he lied quickly. He knew his parents would let him go anywhere if it advanced his studies. They would never even consider letting him go if they knew the real reason.
"Again? That's the third time this week." she commented, concern glistening in her eyes. "If your struggling we can still get you that tutor-"
"I'm fine Mom." he rolled his eyes, not this again. "It's just extra practice, that's all."
"Well if you-"
"I know Mom." he cut her off, not allowing her to go into her normal tangent. She had given this speech a million times at least. At this point Techno could recite it. "I'll be home later," he said shortly, his hand already reaching forward to grab the doorknob.
"Alright." she smiled, returning to her normal expression. "I'm so proud of you honey. Bringing honor to the family name!" The woman turned away from him, completely missing the miserable look on her son's face, like she always did. She never could read him very well, even though she believed she could.
Techno watched after her, shaking his head before turning back to the door. If only she knew, he thought. But he kept his mouth shut, following his feet as he escaped. Even if it was only for a few hours, the time was precious. For once he could feel free.
He didn't necessarily have a destination at first. He simply followed wherever his feet took him. Wandering around town gave him a satisfaction. A pleasure he found difficult feeling anywhere else.
Keeping to himself, he moved past windows and doors, making a point to completely avoid the crowds. The seas of people always made him nervous, no matter how old he got. As he walked, an idea crossed his mind. It had been so long since he had gone to the popular bookshop or even read a book. His face seemed to light up at the idea. Maybe he could even get a new mythology book! Assuming they actually had them. The past few times he had gone, he had returned empty handed.
He made his way down the street, his destination slowly coming in view. A bright smile appeared on his face as his excitement grew. He could hardly wait to enter the new dimension. The realm of worlds and stories. Such a big escape for such a small building.
But walking towards the bookshop, his heart sunk. A crowd of people surrounded the building, lined up right out the door. He stopped, realizing how stupid he was. It was Friday! Which meant it was the release date for one of the most anticipated books of all time. While he had forgotten, the rest of the world clearly hadn't.
Sighing, he turned around, his sudden thirst for a new book disappearing. How could he forget? The entire world had been talking about it for weeks. The best author of the age, who wrote such exciting adventures that were so detailed, that they almost seemed real. The world had fallen in love with the author, Techno included. But no matter how much he wanted that new book, there was no way he could jeopardize himself. His worst nightmare was to have a panic attack in the middle of a crowd. And that's exactly what would happen.
Techno began to wander around once ore, a small sadness still evident in his chest. He tried to just let it go, but the weight of the disappointment wouldn't comply. His hands stayed firmly stuffed in his pockets, only coming out to readjust his glasses.
A strange sense of boredom filled him as he walked. The pleasure he usually had couldn't wash away the disappointment he felt. Taking a deep breath, Techno stopped, staring down at his feet.
Should he go home? Go back to his overwhelming load of homework? No, he shook his head, quickly making the decision. He needed to enjoy his freedom until he was forced out of it.
Looking up, his eyes suddenly landed on a sign he hadn't noticed before.
"Laura's Little Bookshop." he murmured, the words unfamiliar on his tongue. A smile grew on his face as he read the name. Standing there for a moment, his eyes widened. As though it was just for him, he watched a figure turn the sign to open before vanishing out of sight.
Unable to tear his eyes away, he began walking towards the shop. He had a strange rush of excitement, like his body knew there was something wonderful that awaited him.
Taking a deep breath, he pulled the door open, stepping inside.
