Tommy POV

"You can't just leave whenever you want!"

"Yes I can! I'm 18 Dad! I can go whenever I damn want to!"

Tommy covered his ears, hoping to drown out the sound. He hated fighting more than anything. It never ended well.

Despite his efforts, the shouting only increased, making Tommy wrap his blanket around himself tighter. He wanted nothing more than to run to Wilbur and hug him, Wilbur always gave the best hugs. Tommy bit his lip hard, resisting the urge. He curled into his blanket more, praying that would be enough.

He squeezed his eyes shut, trying so hard to think of something-anything else. It was nearly impossible, but he tried his best.

Suddenly the sound of glass shattering could be heard and Tommy's eyes widened. No! He thought, feeling tears prick his eyes. He couldn't handle another home like this, he just couldn't.

His hands shook as he quickly opened his window, looking over the edge. Thankfully he wouldn't have to jump with the tree that grew beside his room. Sure, it was scary, but it was better at least.

Quickly he grabbed the nearest branch, not before throwing his blanket on his bed. He took a deep breath and began climbing, trying to be as careful and fast as he could. He slid down the truck, cutting his hands, but he didn't care. He just needed to get out of there.

Tommy took one last look at the house, before turning and running. He sprinted down the street, trying to find a destination. George popped in his head, but he knew that was not an option.

Most of the group was having a huge party that he hadn't been invited to. That's what had caused the argument between Wilbur and Phil. He didn't really mind not being invited, after all he wasn't really that big on parties.

Finally he stopped walking and looked around. How had he gotten so far? He was nearly all the way to the school, which was almost an hour walk. He took a deep breath, rubbing his arms as he hoped to warm up a little.

Out of the corner of his eye he saw something. A looming shadow. He glanced behind him quickly, praying it was only his imagination. Much to his disappointment, there was in fact someone following. He scrunched his face at the smell of alcohol. He needed to hurry, before something happened.

Tommy began to pick up his pace, trying to lose the shadow. He turned a corner, ducking into a small alley. He moved further into it, his eyes still on the road. A moment passed and he let out a breath he didn't know he had been holding.

Suddenly a hand grabbed him roughly, causing him to yelp in surprise. He was pinned against the wall before he could even put up a fight. He began to shake under the stranger's grip as his brain began to come to terrible conclusions.

"What's a little kid like you doing out here?" the man smirked, studying him closely.

"I-" Tommy couldn't think and he certainly couldn't process what was happening.

Almost as quickly as he was being held, he was free. His eyes widened as a fist collided with the man's face, sending him to the ground. He gasped, looking up to his rescuer.

He could barely believe the man that stood in front of him.

"Tommy? What are you doing out here kid?" the man asked, rubbing his knuckle.

Tommy began to tremble, trying to decipher what he had been so close to. Schlatt quickly took notice, grabbing the blonde gently and pulling him into an embrace. He wasn't completely sure how to handle the situation, but he knew that the blonde needed comfort more than anything.

The blonde stiffened in surprise before melting into the hug. His eyes finally gave way, spilling the held back tears. He gripped Schlatt's shirt, wanting nothing more than to make that feeling go away. The fear.

"You're okay kid, I got you. Alright? I'm right here." Schlatt slowly rubbed his back in the hopes of calming him.

Several minutes passed and Tommy began to calm down. His sobs died down to hiccups, and Schlatt loosened his grip, looking down at him. "You alright now kid?" he questioned, his voice filled with concern that Tommy didn't even know he was capable of.

"I-I think so." Tommy nodded, sniffing.

"Come on, I'll bring you back to Wil-"

"No!" Tommy shouted, horrified by the thought.

Schlatt immediately stared at him, worry shining in his eyes. "Did something happen?" he asked, feeling a wave of wanting to protect the blonde in front of him. Just the thought of someone hurting Tommy made his blood boil.

Tommy looked towards the ground, trying to find the right words. "T-they were fighting... and... I-I-" he shook his head, not wanting to think about it anymore.

"You got scared?" Schlatt finished gently. He nodded, glad that he didn't need to explain further. The man thought for a moment before offering, "I can take you to my place, it's a lot better than out here." he ushered to the passed out man on the ground.

Tommy was quick to agree, just wanting to feel safe. He shivered once more, wrapping his arms around himself. Schlatt swiftly took off his jacket, offering it to the blonde without saying anything. Tommy smiled in response, putting it on. They made their way out of the alley, gaining glares from strangers.

Schlatt wrapped an arm around Tommy, making it clear to everyone that he was under his protection. No one was getting to Tommy without having to go through him first.

The walk was uneventful and before they knew it they had reached his apartment. It was small, but familiar. Tommy laid on the couch, snuggling into the blanket that was already there.

Schlatt grinned, asking, "Can I get you anything kid?"

Tommy shook his head, before a question surfaced. "Why didn't you go to the party tonight?"

Schlatt shrugged, "Parties are pretty lame, especially ones like that." At Tommy's strange look, he added, "You'll understand when you're older kid. Trust me."

Tommy nodded, yawning. "Do you mind if I stay here for the night?"

"Stay as long as you want." Schlatt told him. "Just make sure to tell Wilbur so I don't get murdered in my sleep."

Tommy chuckled, taking his phone out. Surprisingly there were no new messages, meaning that the argument was still prevailing. He quickly sent a text before sighing.

Schlatt glanced towards him, "Sorry you have to deal with this stuff kid."

The blonde shrugged, "I've dealt with it before."

"Doesn't make it right." the man shook his head. He paused, "You're always welcome here, okay kid? You can always come to me. Even if I'm not here during the day, I'll always be back by night."

Tommy laughed, "How would I even get in?"

Schlatt nodded towards the window, "Climb the tree and jump in. It's pretty easy."

"Is that why you get robbed so easily?" Tommy raised an eyebrow.

Schlatt rolled his eyes, "Is that what Wil tells you?"

Tommy giggled making the man smile wider. He loved the kid's laugh. There was just something so pure about it. Something that just makes you want to laugh with him.

"Thank you." the blonde suddenly said. "Seriously."

"Anytime."
