The whole ride from Kathleen's was chaotic. Her and her mum argued about 20 times before singing their hearts out to the radio; they then argued again before quieting down and pulling up to my street, for some reason.
"Why are we here?" I asked stupidly, not knowing how naive I actually was. Kathleen's mother turned to face me and smiled, pointing to my house where my dad was now stood, with around 5o people behind him. "No." I said, now understanding we was never going to Steve's, and that's how everybody knew about my birthday the other day.
"Kimmy.." Kathleen began.
"I am not getting out of this car." I stropped, crossing my arms over my chest. "How could you lie to me like this? The pair of you!" I exclaimed in panic, not liking the idea of a surprise party with people I didn't even like.
"Please, stop being a brat and get out of the car." Kathleen said as she opened the door to the passenger side. She slammed her door closed and stood on the pavement at the bottom of my drive with her arms crossed, waiting for me.
"I'm not getting out of this car, Shanae. I hope you know that." I pouted at her as she watched me from the mirror above her head. She laughed at my behaviour and nodded at somebody from outside of the car.
The door besides me opened, and I felt the cold air hit my bare skin.
"Princess, stop being stubborn and get out of the car." Eddie said gently as he crouched down besides the seat, his body on the outside of the car. I turned to look at him with sad eyes, hoping he would give in and let me stay in the vehicle. "No. It's not going to work this time." He said with a shake of his head as he watched my face. "Your dad has put his heart and soul into this, don't be rude...do you know how long he's spent today setting this up for you? He and your mom are leaving town just so they don't embarrass you they said, so get out of the car otherwise I'll drag you out myself." His voice became stern as he held his bottom lip in between his teeth, waiting for a response.
I looked over to him and sighed, feeling bad for my dad as I stepped out of the car and closed it, waving goodbye to Kathleen's mum.
"I'll never forgive you for this." I pointed to Kathleen as I held onto Eddie for support, worried these heels would deceive me and break my ankles.
"It wasn't just me!" She cried out in defence, her jaw hanging. I scoffed and walked side by side with the pair of them up my drive towards my fathers open arms.
"Be nice, princess." Eddie whispered in my ear before he left a gentle kiss on my temple.
"Happy birthday, Pumpkin!" My father called to me from the porch step, his voice being followed by loud cheers from people in the house. Some were at the outside at the door with him, some peeping through the curtains to the living room and other stood behind him in the house. I smiled at them all, holding onto Eddie's hand as we approached them.
"Happy birthday!"
"You look good, Cassidy"
"Oh you look gorgeous!"
"Happy birthday, Kim!"
People spoke to me as I walked past them; I stopped in front of my dad who looked way too proud. "Dad, don't." I said like a teenage girl. He only smiled and pulled me in for a hug.
