The game had just begun and Eddie was still a no show. I wouldn't have minded if he didn't want to come, but it pissed me off that he told me he wouldn't miss it for the world, and missed it for something anyway.
I stood behind Chrissy, who did the routine perfectly, watching Jason with the biggest and brightest smile on her face. It pained me to see it, mainly because I wish it was I who was smiling like that at my boyfriend, but apparently he had better things to be doing.
We finished up and walked over to the bleachers to watch the game, listening to the crowd cheering for their school team. It was cliche, because the people cheering were the ones who were seen as outcasts to the players, yet they were loyal anyway.
I clapped unenthusiastically with every point we scored, keeping my eyes on the gym doors expecting to see the wavy haired boy who had my heart strings on edge with every breath I took near him, just waltz in.
Over an hour later, the game ended and there was still no sign of him. I observed the crowd as they began to scuttle out of the gym and saw Steve with Carol and Tommy, laughing at something that probably wasn't funny.
"Steve!" I called to him from the gym floor, standing up and running over to him. He looked down at me and smiled small.
"Hey." He said as I approached him.
"Hi. Have you seen Eddie?." I asked, watching as the happiness faded from his eyes and his expression changed.
"Nope." His response was blunt and almost forced, as if he didn't have the time to be talking to me. He walked past me and carried on towards the exit.
"Wait!." I called again, making him stop in his tracks. He turned and faced me.
"What?" He almost spat his words. I was taken back by his attitude.
"What's your problem recently? It's like you've been avoiding me or something." I sighed sadly, not wanting things to be weird between us again.
"How can I avoid you when you're with the freak every day?" Steve responded, his tone off putting.
"He's my boyfriend, Steve. Why can't you just understand that I'm happy with him?" I asked saddened.
"Because he's a prick, and I can't stand to see you with someone who's only going to hurt you sooner or later." He shrugged, shoving his hands into the pockets of his light blue jeans.
"So why is it okay for you to get back with Nancy, who cheated on you may I add, but it's not okay for me to be with somebody who's only ever shown me kindness and love?" I asked in astonishment, not believing the words coming from his mouth as the gym was almost completely empty.
"She didn't cheat on me, okay?-"
"Ohh, so her sleeping in the same bed as another boy whilst having a boyfriend is fine then, is it?" I asked with a scoff, shaking my head at how ridiculous this boy was being right now.
"It's disrespectful, yes, but it's not cheating. We worked things out.." he trailed off, pausing before he spoke again. "Actually, if that's how this conversation is going then tell me why it's okay for you to hate Nance but I can't even dislike Eddie in the slightest?" He turned it on me.
"I don't hate her. I just hate that she broke your heart and you allowed her back into your life so easily." My words came out weaker than I wanted them too, understanding that he was partially right but defending myself never the less.
