Kimberly had sat in her house, day after day since her and Eddie broke up, and it had been six days already. We tried to see her before school and after, even with Dustin tagging along but her Mom would come back to the door and shake her head at us, letting us know that Kim wasn't ready yet.
We weren't expecting her to be over the moon by now, no way, but the least we did expect was that she'd show up to school and maybe even let one of us speak to her. Only two nights ago I tried to sneak into her room, hoping that might help, but her window was locked and her curtain drawn which she hadn't done since before Eddie.
She said it was something he did and she grew use to it, I don't know. Anyway, the whole point I was trying to make was that she was down bad.
Today was Wednesday, another ordinary day for most but for Hawkins High it was one of the qualifying games for the end of the tournament, and if we didn't win it meant no championship, and we needed Kim for it.
She was one of the centre pieces of the cheer squad and she gave the lads hope when they saw her bright smile amid the other students cheering for them. They didn't know that she hated the occupation more than she let on, but what difference would it make?.
"Steve, we've tried this over a hundred times already!." Dustin exclaimed to me from the passenger door of my car as I walked up the pavement to Kimberly's house. "She won't listen to you!." He tried to tell me what I already knew, but I wouldn't leave without her, not this time.
I walked through the front door and quickly popped my head into the lounge to let Mrs Cassidy know I was here.
"I'm taking her to school with me." I nodded over at Maureen who couldn't have cared less, considering her part time babysitter was unable to do her job for her.
Following the stairs around and finding Kim's room, first on the left, I opened the door and saw her sat up on her bed, her eyes drained of life and the skin on her lips as dry as sandpaper.
"Kim.." I said to her with a sigh, hating the fact that she was doing this to herself over Eddie 'The freak' Munson... Seriously?. The dude was okay and all, for what it's worth, but he wasn't anything special. "Come on. Up!." I walked over to her bed and ripped the sheet from her, not having cared whether she was naked or not.
She wasn't, by the way.
"Go away, Steve." She mumbled and kept her eyes on the wall opposite her.
"No. The game is today and you are going to be there whether you like it or not." I said to her as my hands held onto her arms and pulled her from the bed, listening to a small whine escape her lips at the sensation of being moved for the first time in presumably days.
Not like her piece of shit mother would've cared enough to look after her grieving daughter.
"They don't need me." Kim tried to argue, but I instead wrapped her arm around my shoulder and practically carried her to the restroom for a shower. I should've done this a long time ago as a best friend should, but it was also wrong for me to not give her a small amount of space when she desperately needed it. "What are you doing?." She asked me as I shut and locked the restroom door behind me, turning to face her and wasting no time to get her undressed for a shower.
