Within my deep slumber, I heard three rattling thumps which then turned into my Uncle Wayne raising his voice, meaning those knocks weren't in my dream, but at the front door to the trailer.
"Eddie!" He called croakily from his room besides mine. I groaned and rubbed my eyes, flinging my feet over the bed and exposing my bare thighs to the damp air, seeing the digital clock on my broken dresser displaying -
'【4:30 AM】'.
"I'll get it." I grunted in response, pulling a pair of grey sweats over my legs and walking out of my room towards the door.
"It's goddamn morning, son." Wayne muttered angrily, obviously only just being able to fall asleep after yet again a pain filled night of coughs and struggled breathing. "Tell whoever it is to go away." He continued angrily as I passed the kitchen and unlocked the front door.
My eyes opened widely as Kimberly stood wet and shivering on my door step with an averaged sized suitcase.
"I'm so sorry, Ed. I- I didn't kn-know where else t-to go." Her words were fumbled, tears beginning to stream down her face.
"Eddie, son. Who is it?" My uncle asked from the end of the corridor, either concerned or frustrated.
"Uncle, you shouldn't be out of bed." I hissed at him from the front door as I pulled Kim into the house, picking her suitcase up and dropping it by the front door.
"Kimberly, darlin'..what happened?" His voice was immediately soothing, wobbling over to my girlfriend who looked the most scared and confused I had ever seen her.
"My mum, she, uh..she kicked me out." Kim whispered with guilt, shaking her head with a dry laugh and wiping away the small water droplets leaking down her face. "I'm sorry to do this to you, Wayne. I just-" she began to apologise to my Uncle who shushed her and brought her body close to his.
"Don't you ever apologise, darlin'. This ain't your fault." Wayne's voice was comforting, helping Kimberly to calm down.
"What'd she kick you out for?" I asked in a snarl, feeling the anger boiling beneath my skin at her Mom. Maureen was always a shit, even worse after Michael and Andrew was born.
"I told her..well, she found out about our engagement." her words were soft but I could see the pain behind them, circling her eyes. "We yelled and she just hit me in the face. The worst thing about it, is that I finally stood up for myself and I just allowed her to treat me like that.." her feet moved backwards slowly towards the couch before she landed onto its surface. My Uncle Wayne turned to look at me with an expression I had never witnessed from him before.
"That's why she kicked you out?" I scoffed at how idiotic her Mom was to not let her only daughter live the life she wanted. She shook her head no and made a snorting kind of noise, but I think it was more of a pained laugh than a chuckle.
"She kicked me out because I told her the truth, that she would always be a raging alcoholic who tried to replace her sons with babies she never wanted because I was never enough for her, and that she hated me out of fear of me becoming her." She wiped away her tears with a sigh. "I know what I said was wrong, like, really bad..but I can't deal with her abusive behaviour any longer. Her and my brothers aren't my responsibility and I can't ruin my chances at a good life, a good future with you.." she paused for a second to look at me. "If I have to deal with that..that fucking monster..." she began to say something, but cut her self off. "She's a problem I don't need." Kimberly finished, rubbing the palms of her hands on her bare thighs as she was only wearing pyjama shots and an oversized shirt.
