Paige had been on my mind for the past three hours and it was just making me more and more furious the less I did about it. Eddie was right, I shouldn't be getting myself into fights this year, or at all, but I just couldn't promise that I wouldn't say something to the girl.
I didn't care if it was because of her father, that didn't make it right. Her opinions didn't make sense, because how could she be friends with Kathleen but not date her because of her skin colour? Surely if it was because of her dad, then she couldn't even be friends with her, right?.
Eddie and Steve could see that it had been bugging me all day, and Kathleen wasn't making the situation any better by ignoring us for the girl.
She hadn't even said hello to any of us yet, because she was glued to Paige's side like a lap dog. It infuriated me, and I wish it was because of jealousy, but it was in fact the complete opposite. I now despised Paige. I hated her. How could she lead my friend on like that, knowing nothing would ever come out of it?.
"Kimberly." Steve caught my attention at the dinner table. "Stop staring at them." He told me, making me realise my eyes hadn't left them for over fifteen minutes.
"I need to tell her." I turned to the boy and told him, knowing if anybody would try to stop me, it would be him.
"No you don't." Steve said to me quickly. "Don't do that." He shook his head in disapproval. "Kim, you'll only make it worse." He tried to reason with me, but I just couldn't sit there another minute and watch her flirt with Kathleen as if they were a couple. I knew they would never be now, and it was igniting the fire in my chest.
"Princess, listen to him." Eddie murmured from the magazine he was indulged in, half a slice of pizza in his hand.
"What the fuck do I do then?." I asked the boys as a collective. "I'm going to explode or something." I ran my hands through my hair and groaned in annoyance.
"Shit. She's coming over." Steve hissed at us in a worry. I quickly looked up and saw the two girls practically already at our table.
"Hey." I smiled up at her and said, completely ignoring Paige. "Where've you been?." I stood up to hug her. "You've been hiding all day." My words fell from my mouth as I embraced myself into her thick hair.
"Not hiding. Just hanging out with Paige." She smiled and turned to the girl who had her eyes directly on me and she did not look happy.
"Ah. I see." I smiled fakely at the short haired girl, not wanting to give her the satisfaction of me ruining my friendship with Kathleen. "What are you guys doing after school?." I asked Kathleen rather than Paige, wanting to see if I could get her alone. "I'm not in school till Thursday afternoon so maybe we could, I don't know, hang at my place later?." I asked Kathleen with a glimpse of hope in my voice.
"We already have plans. Sorry Kim." Paige said from behind her, causing the colour in my face to drop.
Oh, I knew what she was doing.
"Anything fun?." I asked with a sarcastic smile, seething on the inside. Kathleen looked at me funnily, and I knew she could tell something was off.
"Just the movies..hey, can I talk to you for a second?." Kathleen said before asking, definitely suspicious now. I nodded and followed her further up the cafeteria towards the double doors. "What's happening?." She asked me as we stopped and I leant against the wall.
