The car ride to the hospital was deadly silent, the air filled with quiet thoughts and the breathing from our lungs. I kept my hand on Eddie's the entire time because I knew he needed it.

When Eddie pulled up outside, he quickly jumped out of the van and ran around to my door to open it for me, still managing to be a gentleman in the midst of our ruffle. I smiled small at him and held onto his hand as we walked into the building. I hoped and prayed we wouldn't see my parents, because I didn't need Eddie to feel any worse than he already did.

"Hi, Lisa." Eddie greeted the young girl at the reception desk, who smiled shyly at him in return, the same girl I had spoken to earlier this evening when I needed to get a message across to my dad.

"Hi, Ed's." My eyes flickered between the pair, furrowing my eyebrows at the scene.

She fancied him.

"Can we go through?." He asked her politely, his tone dripping with dejection. She nodded and smiled with her teeth this time, standing up and walking around the desk.

"Sure, follow me." She nodded for us to follow her.

"Oh, no. It's okay, we can go alone." He told her, making the small blonde stop in her tracks, her eyes flickering to our hands and the smile dropping from her face.

"Okay. Let me know if you need me." Her demeanour was stiff now, walking back to her seat and not making eye contact with us.

I snorted to myself as Eddie pulled me down the corridor and towards the lift.

"I think somebody has a -" I began to tease, but he cut me off.

"It's very obvious, ain't it?." He agreed with me, causing a smile to break out on my face along with his. We laughed as the elevator doors opened, my eyes widening as I saw my brother and father about to exit.

"Kim?." He asked, looking at Eddie afterwards. "Hey, Ed. What's going on?." I could hear the concern in his voice.

"What are you guys doing here?." Eddie asked the pair, who both looked at me in confusion.

"I haven't told him." I muttered to them mutely. I felt Eddie's hand tighten at my words, realising something was wrong.

"Told me what?." He turned to face me, not being able to decide who to look at as his eyes flickered between the three of us.

"Maureen's in surgery. She's having a premature birth." The tone of my fathers words sounded as they had only a few hours ago.

"Shit. Is she okay?." Eddie asked concerned. My father nodded and walked up to me, giving me a hug.

"It's fine, pumpkin. She'll be okay." He tried to reassure me, but I didn't care about her, I cared about them.

"I have to go. We have to go." I panicked and pulled Eddie away from the two men and into the lift, trying to make it close faster than it possibly could. As the doors shut slowly, I saw my dad and David share looks with one another before they were out of sight.

"Why didn't you tell me?." Eddie piped up, breaking the silence. "Kim, why didn't you tell me?." He repeated himself straight after.

"It's not a big deal. She'll be okay." I shrugged, not wanting to talk about it. The elevator doors opened and Eddie was hesitant in pulling us out, but he did and he walked us down the corridor and into one of the hospital rooms.
