She/her readerIgnoring how the harsh winds of Hebra shook her to her bones as she left the stable, Y/n traversed the wooden bridge that connected the land to the isles that formed Rito Village.
Imposing, impenetrable, yet cozy and, overall, a magnificent sight.
The bird people greeted her as she moved up the wooden stairways, and, upon reaching a large landing space, Y/n was quick to sieze the moment, and after steeling herself, she moved closer to the group of young Rito warriors that talked among themselves, seemigly resting."Um..sorry, can i bother you for a moment?" She made it to the group, who al turned towards her, curious, but not hostile.
Y/n gulped, now having everybody's attention "i..uh...i heard you were recruiting people to take care of a monster in the muntains, and i'm equipped to help. I have plenty experience," she said, though her tone was a bit shaky. She hoped they would all blame it on the cold.
The group seemed to look at each other, agreeing, maybe?
Y/n felt a bit of relief, but it was shattered as a laugh broke through the entrance to the landing."A Hilyan wants to join the expedition? Surely, you can find some better place to get charity from. The reward isn't that high" the voice was mocking, and Y/n felt her heart drop.
"Revali, you said it yourself we needed as much help as possible" one of the young rito in the group quipped, just to be met with a scoff from the blue-fethered rito.
"I said you would have needed as much help ad possible. We all know i could take care of it on my own. But you're all so hellbent on wasting resources," Revali crossed his arms, standing toe-to-toe with the other Rito.
Y/n felt her stomach ache just from the sheer embarassment. Revali was a well known rito, the best of his kind.
Though..."why haven't you gone and killed it yet then?"Silence fell on the wooden landing, all eyes on Y/n. Had she really said that? Out loud? In front of complete strangers and the next Rito Champion?
Revali's beak hanged open, before he shook his head, trying to hide the ruffle of embarassment of his feathers.
"You-" he started, walking closer and pointing a feathered finger to Y/n's chest "and what do you know huh? I was- i was just preapring to, actually," he lied, looking a bit off to the side, but still keeping his tone of superiority.
"But since you're sooo much better than me, let's make it a game!" He exclaimed, opening his arms.
"I never said that-" Y/n mumbled, taking a step back.
"I'll give you a head start. You can try and kill that monster, but let's face it, it'll be a miracle if it dosn't smash you to smithereens."
"I'd rather not, really-" Y/n shook her head, but the look the Rito gave her, mocking, making her feel insignificant, ignited something deep in her chest.
"If...if i do it, and kill the monster, will i get the prize that was in the poster?" She asked.
"Oh, yes. That and more. You'll get to boast about beating Me. Though we know what happens next" he chuckled, before turning his back and heading back towards the village.
"And no cheating! You'll get there by foot, with no outside help" he turned his head, smirking, and then soared in the air, followed by a strong gust of wind that almost made Y/n fall on the floor. She was left speechless, with two opportunities: try, fail miserably, and be ashamed for life, or leave and never show her face again, being ashamed for life.
Neither would end up well, so, she might as well just die trying to fight that monster.
She sighed heavily, both incredibly exhasperated and annoyed. The Rito on the landing were still watching, some snickering, some looking at the girl with pity.
"We'd love to help, but we don't usually go against Revali...sorry," one spoke, patting Y/, on her back with his winged arm.
She gave a slight smile, shrugging, "i get it, don't worry. I guess uh...i'll be back soon, hopefully," she gritted her teeth, before beginnin to walk away, and with every descending step towards the muntains, she felt her heart drop a little more, and her gut screaming at her to reconsider.
She couldn't ignore the cold now.
She saw the blizard coming, she could have turned her back, but she didn't.
Did she want to prove herself? Yes.
Why? Only the Goddes knew.
But now, more than ever, with a Frost Talus scouting the area to find her again, and possibly shatter her skull with a rocky fist, she couldn't loose herself in her overthinking, she needed to use it to her advantage. She'd thought of most possibilities. Terrains, weather conditions, the placement of the monster's ore-like heart.
The snow could cover her. She could sneak by and chip at the Talu's heart with the countless arrows she had on her, slowly, but surely winning this fight, saving her own life, and dignity.
Now, tucked in her jacket and hood, bow in hand, she just needed to find the right route to damage the ice giant.
She peeked her head up over the rock protecting her, and, siezing the moment, she shot an arrow that hit the ore, the Frost Talus losing a bit of it's balance.
Now was a great time to move, as it readied it's arm for launch.
As it did, Y/n rolled on the snow, swiftly reaching another safe place withing the snowy area, and, with an arrow ready on the string of the bow, she aimed at the gemostone once more. The arrow whistled as it cut the air, but, before it could hit it's mark, the Talus had shifted, and it flew back down in the snow.
"Shit" the girl spat, hitting her fist on the rock that shielded her.
The Talus had ojce again hifted it's focus on Y/n, and she readied herself to swish away as the monster prepared it's second arm to attack.
Y/n ran iut of cover as the ice was launched, but the snow had made her falter on her feet, and her timing was off.
Shards flew everywhere as the golem's arm shattered on the ground, hitting her back, and making her fall forward.
With the bow lost in the snow, and a safe place too far ahead, Y/n grunted in pain.
Was that it? Everything she'd ever accomplished, more and more distant with every closing step of the Frost Talus. At least she wouln't have to live with the embarassment.
She closed her eyes, her body slowly adjustung to the cold, the wetness of the snow seeping in her clothes not bothering her anymore.
And she waited.
And waited, before a big crash startled her.
The Frost Talus had shattered in chunks, falling to the ground like an avalanche."I told you it would end like this"
Y/n groaned into the snow. He was never gonna let her live it down, wasn't he.
"Are you dead? Come on, i waisted my precious time in saving you, you know? I almost decided not to come. But i did, you should be glad, really" Revaly said, before he sighed loudly, crouching to help Y/n up.
"I guess you could thank me later" he said, guiding the hylian towards a small cave, away from the cascading snow and strong winds.
"I'd take you back but, it was already a feat coming here with that weather" he commented, looking outside.
He then remained silent for a moment, before turning back to Y/n.
"I guess... i guess what you did was remarkable. Not even us rito managed to take that monster down but, you took it's health down enough. I should thank you too. But don't get used to it!" He turned his face, embarassed, "it could have been just beginners' luck."
