Packing up

It was a very sleepy and disgruntled Nyx that her family dragged to Lady Mater's house that day.

"I don't see why we have to clear up! The guests made the mess, let them clean it up!"
Rachel rolled her eyes. "That's not how it works, Nyx."
"Should be."

Lady Mater met them in the ballroom, where Luci and a few other maids and various staff members were beginning to take the decorations down.
She smiled broadly at them. "Beginning to think you weren't coming! We've taken some of the stuff down already, but there's still tons to do. Nyx, can I borrow you for a second?"
Both Rachel and Nyx looked confused. "Why?"
"It's about a... friend of ours."
Nyx caught her drift. "Oh, yes, alright."

"Where is he?"
As soon as they were out of earshot, Lady Mater rounded on her.
Nyx blinked in surprise. "He's not here?"
"The smashed window on the second floor states otherwise. I figured he'd try to find you."
"He did." Nyx said, nodding. "He turned up at my house. But then he left, so I figured he'd come back here."
"Well, he didn't."
"I can tell, funnily enough. Your general frantic-ness was a big give-away."

Selene gestured her head to Lady Mater and Nyx. "Wonder what's got them in a flap?"
Luci shrugged, unpinning the end of a string of glittery spiders.
"I think something's happened with one of the guests in the mansion. Not that I'm surprised. We get some strange ones, we really do."
Selene narrowed her eyes. "Strange how?"
"Misfits. Freaks. Lost. You know, the ones that don't quite fit." Luci shrugged nonchalantly. "Most of us here are like that. Evelyn gives us a place to belong, you know?"
"I know."

The silence was heavy.

"So why'd your boyfriend beat up that other guy? He managed to shut down a pretty epic party."
Selene looked sad and partially guilty. "I got drunk, stupid and now I'm not sure if we're still dating."
"Ah."

Nyx threw her hands up in the air. "So let me get this straight. You've basically lost Sebastian Morgenstern? That's just brilliant! Just brill..."

The door swung open with a crash and a hooded figure stalked in.

Nyx glanced at him over her shoulder. "Never mind, I've found him."
