Chapter XII.

"Miss, your horse is already prepared," the cadet entered the office, saluting obediently.

"Thank you," she fixed her hair and said goodbye to her father. She walked with the cadet towards the exit, where the horse was waiting for her. She sighed at the thought of having to survive on his back all the way to the Trost. She jumped on top of him and started to fasten her straps when she heard loud screams. She looked up to notice that something had fallen from a higher building a short distance from the base. She immediately jumped off her horse and ran in that direction. She pushed her way through a group of terrified people and realized with horror that what had fallen was a person. Better said, what was left of Simon body lay on the ground. Her eyes were wide open scanning a huge amount of blood pouring from her head. Her femur was sticking out of her leg and her face was twisted in agony. Chills of anger went through her. She immediately looked at the building where she spotted two men on its roof. She turned back to the base, ignoring the desperate cries of the civilians. With a quick step, she entered the equipment warehouse. She strapped on the ODM gear almost immediately. She walked out, sheathing her blades, only to be met with Levi's confused look, who was just coming out of Hanje's lab.

"What are you doing?" He asked her noticing her gear. She did not answer him and walked towards the exit. She looked back at the building Simon had fallen from. She aimed and used her gear to climb up to the building across from the base and right after that to the next building. She jumped onto the roof and looked around. She listened to the wind and walked slowly across the roof tiles, keeping her balance. She suddenly turned her head in the direction from where she heard the shot. Two strong hands pulled her to the roof. "Are you crazy?" Levi held her under him with an angry look on his face. She immediately rolled him off and ran across the roof following the attackers. She anchored on the opposite building from where the shot came. She flew over there and ran as fast as she could. The attacker was hiding behind the chimney. Another shot. Theia jumped into the air just in time and dodged the blow. She made a turn, jumped behind the enemy and cut his throat with one blow.

"One down," she whispered to herself. Levi jumped up next to her and pushed her against the chimney with all his strength.

"Hey!" He yelled at her. She finally looked into his eyes.

"Levi leave me alone," she told him seriously, still looking over at her colleague's other killer.

"You know they're after you and you're going to serve yourself here?" he asked her, pushing her harder and harder.

"Simon wasn't weak enough to be killed by two guys," Theia said loudly. Their conversation was interrupted by another shot in their direction. Almost immediately, she pulled Levi and pressed him protectively against the chimney with her own body. He stared at her in surprise and noticed how the bullet narrowly missed her foot. He quickly took her hand and by using the equipment jumped to the other building and next to the ground. He dragged her until they went around the building from the other side and pushed her against the wall again, watching all the movements around.

"Levi," she began.

"Shut up," he hissed. Equipment whistled through the air and members of the military police began to secure the area. Theia let out a breath and straightened up. Levi angrily looked at her.

"What is it?" She asked irritated. Levi broke eye contact and slowly walked out of their temporary shelter heading back to the base.

"Why did you try to protect me?" He asked seriously as she walked close behind him.

"Instinct," she answered simply.

"Your instinct makes you want to kill yourself?" He cut her off unpleasantly.
